We need a Women's Congress

Dame Lois Browne Evasns

June 27, 2011Dear Sir,Last week someone put the question out there:What do you think of ‘Girl Power'? Then in The Royal Gazette Business page 33, Friday, June 24, 2011 heading: “Attitudes, ideas must change.” Therefore, I am not putting myself out on a limb to be ridiculed by anyone who is misinformed about the direction Bermuda is heading: We have women out there who can lead like Dame Lois Browne Evans, Dr Barbara Ball, former Premier and leader of the UBP Dame Pamela Gordon, former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith and our now Premier Paula Cox.I would like to put the suggestion forward: it is time we create a National Womens Congress to run in the next election. The political scene here in Bermuda has become top heavy and both parties are carrying too many negatives. Therefore I cannot see how either party — The One Bermuda Alliance nor the Progressive Labour Party — are in any way capable of putting together enough candidates to run a successful and viable campaign for the next election. The country has lost its way under a male dominant leadership. When you read in our Saturdays, June 25, 2011 edition page 33 of The Royal Gazette, it ‘doesn't make sense'.Words spoken in regard to our courts and its inconsistencies in its sentencing powers are not consistent with what one would consider a stable Government or country. When we read that a more informed person can see that if we do not address our social agenda there could be a revolution on the horizon. Rather than going independent or toying with that idea, let's think outside the box. Let's become independent thinkers and select a totally new party. We can do both by voting in an all new independent elected National Women Congress, a group that can become the envy of the world. It can be done and be successful on a simple platform.
