Safety not a burning issue for residents of White Hill Lane
Despite a recent spate of violence centred around Somerset Parish, residents told they are not overly concerned about safety in the area.
Last Friday night in Somerset, two separate gang attacks put one man in hospital with a broken arm and left another robbed of his bike and wallet.
The two incidents, which both involved groups of young men, took place within yards of each other near White Hill Lane and a little more than 24 hours apart.
When visited the area on Monday, some residents said they had not even heard of the weekend violence, while others said it was limited to a group of young men fighting amongst themselves.
One long-time area resident said most people in the area do not get involved.
"We hear them talking badly to one another but they don't bother the older people," she said. "They keep their problems to themselves."
Junius Burrows, the owner of Burrows Plumbing, which is located a few doors down from the popular hang out spot at White Hill, has lived in the area for 72 years.
He said he has never had any fears for his safety.
"They treat me real nice, they call me Mr. Burrows," he said.
But Pastor of United Apostolic Church, BettyAnn Lightbourne said she is concerned for young people in the area.
"There is not a fear for safety but a concern that people do not have respect for the next person," she said.
Ms Lightbourne said the church had run special services for young people, but few attended.
"This seems to be about competition among young people ? combine that with drugs and it seems like anything can happen," she said. "Many of these young people also do not feel loved or cared for."
On Friday around 9 p.m., an assault and robbery took place at a White Hill Lane home.
The victim told Police he was alone in the property when he heard noises outside the front door and saw a group of men in the front yard.
The men attacked the man, punched him and hit him with helmets and bats. The victim was taken to KEMH for treatment of a suspected broken arm.
In the second incident, which took place at about 4 a.m. last Friday at the Somerset ferry dock a 17-year-old Paget man had his bike, wallet, cellular phone and watch stolen.
The man told Police that he was at the dock with his girlfriend when a white truck and two motorcycles entered the area. The Paget youth was approached by four men, one who grabbed him around the neck and demanded his wallet.
Under the threat of personal violence, the 17-year-old gave the men his wallet, containing personal items, an Audiovox cellular phone and a watch. They also stole his auxiliary cycle ? a dark blue Honda Scoopy ? before making their getaway.
The suspects are described as four, dark-skinned black men wearing baggy jeans and white t-shirts, believed to be between 18 and 21-years-old.
