Coach Reid top target for Somerset Bridge

Somerset Bridge Recreation Club (SBRC) president Marc Bean believes former Bermuda and Somerset Cup Match batsman Winston Reid is the right man to resurrect his club's stagnant cricket programme.

Earlier this week The Royal Gazette revealed that the First Division club had expressed a strong desire to have the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Level Two certified coach come onboard this season.

And yesterday Government senator Bean confirmed that his administration had taken steps to lure the former assistant national coach's cricket expertise to the club.

"Our desire is to strengthen our cricket programme at all levels.

"We have sought out Reid's wealth of cricket experience and we are very much looking forward to bringing onboard," Bean said.

"In Reid we believe we have a person capable of taking our cricket programme forward at all levels and we are pleased to be in discussions with him to see how things can work moving forward.

"Our desire, in the same vein as our football programme, is to have the best coaches available and give them the leeway to develop a programme to move us forward."

Only recently Bean's club clinched the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) First Division and with it promotion to the top tier next season for the first time in four seasons.

And now the Bridge chief has challenged the club's cricketers to follow suit.

"It's been our desire for some time now to strengthen our cricket programme," he added.

Speaking on his club's recent football success, Bean said: "I am very pleased with the progress made by our football team and my congratulations go out to Kenny (Somerset Eagles coach Kenny Thompson) and his players for a job well done."

Bean has dedicated his club's league title to goalkeeper Gabriel Wilkinson, who is recovering from serious head injury in a US hospital, and is confident they can hold their own against the Island's top dogs next season.

"We understand the level is higher in the Premier Division," he added.

"And so in terms of consistency we have to focus on discipline, desire, intensity and most importantly intelligence."
