Breaking News: Manslaughter charge over Dockyard death

A couple were today charged with offences relating to the death of a 22-year-old man in an alleged hit and run accident at the weekend.

Raymond (Smockie) Curtis was reportedly struck by a car as he walked home from Woody’s Sports Bar, Sandys, in the early hours of Saturday. Police were called to Malabar Road at 3.48 a.m. where they found Mr. Curtis lying unconscious in the street. He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital but pronounced dead at 4.30 a.m.

Mr. Curtis, of Albert Row, was just minutes from his home when the alleged incident took place.

This morning, a 22-year-old man appeared in court charged with manslaughter. His 19-year-old girlfriend — who is eight months pregnant — was charged with being an accessory to manslaughter after the fact.

Mendall Eugene Outerbridge, of Sandys, is charged with the unlawful killing of Raymond Curtis on September 6 and of causing his death by driving a motor car which was dangerous to the public. He is also accused of driving a car without a vehicle and drivers’ licence and of having no third party insurance.

Leonae Jameca Simmons, of Sandys, is charged with receiving, relieving or assisting a person to escape punishment on September 6 in the knowledge of manslaughter having been committed.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner granted both defendants bail until their next court appearance on September 23. Outerbridge’s bail is set at $20,000 and Simmons at $5,000.
