Rangers resume chase for perfect season
Village could follow a few days later during a busy week of involving make-up matches.
Two First Division and one Second Division match will take place tonight at two venues as the BFA attempt to clear up a backlog of games. The matches were postponed from January 29.
The most important of tonight's matches will be at PHC Stadium where Vasco take on last-placed BAA, starting at 9.00. It will be preceded at 7.00 by the rescheduled Second Division encounter between promotion-chasing Social Club and division champions Southampton Rangers who are attempting to win all 16 of their league outings. So far they have reached 13 without defeat.
Three teams are chasing the second promotion spot, with Social Club having the edge. They are fourth in the standings, three points behind St. David's and four behind second-placed Somerset Eagles but with three games in hand over both teams.
One of the teams whose First Division place is in jeopardy is BAA who face a must win situation against Vasco.
Victory for Vasco -- and PHC at Somerset where they meet Devonshire Colts (8.00) -- will mean those two teams will move on to 16 points, the maximum that Devonshire Cougars and BAA can amass. Cougars have already played their make-up match, going down 2-1 to Somerset Trojans.
If Vasco and PHC win it would mean that they could only then be relegated on goal difference, and that is where Cougars and BAA are suffering as they have the worst records in the division. Cougars are minus eight and BAA minus 14.
If Colts manage to beat PHC tonight they would move at least two places up the standings, ahead of the Zebras and North Village who are one of three teams on 14 points. Village's make-up game is on Friday night against Boulevard.
Victory for Village would also move them to virtual safety as they, too, would then need just one draw from their final three matches to be safe from the threat of relegation.
Tonight's match between PHC and Devonshire Colts will be preceded by the Crystal Palace semi-final replay at 6.00 between Somerset and Devonshire Colts at Somerset. The teams played to an exciting 2-2 draw in their first meeting at Southampton Oval.
Vasco and Rangers have an extra busy midweek schedule as they play a second match on Thursday night in the Friendship and Shield semi-finals at BAA Field.
Rangers take on St. David's, the only Second Division team to beat them this season (FA Cup preliminary round), in the Shield encounter which starts at 7.00.
The feature match will see Vasco taking on champions Dandy Town in what will be a repeat of last year's Friendship Trophy final.
Vasco are bidding to reach two end-of-season finals.
