The Montpelier Re Foundation is set to provide $60,000 in student scholarships this year after the Foundation’s Scholarship Selection Committee agreed to boost 2012 funding to assist three new recipients.Erin Jackson is the winner of the Foundation’s $15,000 award for 2012. She is entering her final year of veterinary medicine at the Royal Veterinary College in London, England and eventually plans to return to Bermuda as a veterinary surgeon with a specialisation in small animals.The Selection Committee also agreed to provide two additional awards of $5,000 apiece to support Kirsten Nusum and Subira Dill. Ms Nusum is entering her third year of a nursing degree at Old Dominion University in Virginia and hopes to eventually become a surgical nurse at King Edward Memorial Hospital.Ms Dill is entering her third year of a risk management and insurance degree at Temple University in Philadelphia and is aiming for a career in international business.Barclay Simmons, head of the Scholarship Selection Committee, said: “The Scholarship Committee continues to be impressed with the calibre of Bermudian students it sees each year. This is a good sign for Bermuda and augers well for our future. The trustees of the Foundation are proud to support their ambitions.”The Montpelier Re Scholarship was launched by the Foundation in 2009 and is funded by Montpelier Reinsurance Ltd.It is open to full-time Bermudian students who are entering either the third or fourth year of a degree programme at an accredited university or college. There is no limit on the age of applicants and it is open to students pursuing any field of study.“Montpelier is pleased to assist all of our scholarship recipients with their education,” said Christopher Harris, CEO and president of Montpelier Group. “I would like to congratulate Erin, Subira and Kirsten and also thank the selection committee for its efforts in reviewing the large number of applications received this year.”This is the third year in a row that the Selection Committee has increased its scholarship funding so it can assist more than one student per year. Last year’s winners and biology majors, Alesha Page and Teleza Pitcher, will continue to be supported this year with funding of $15,000 and $5,000, respectively.In addition, the Foundation has agreed to continue its support of scholarships provided by the National Dance Foundation of Bermuda. The Madame Ana Roje Commemorative Award and the Georgine Mary Russell Hill Scholarship are both funded by Montpelier at $7,500 and are designed to assist students, teachers and choreographers pursuing advanced dance training at recognised universities or other professional overseas programmes.Recipients will be announced shortly.
