Tributes paid to man killed when bike crashed into tree
A devoted father has died in a bike accident right outside of the construction company where he worked.The 49-year-old married man, who has a teenage daughter, lost control of his bike and crashed into a tree on Middle Road in Devonshire.The man, who lives in Devonshire, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital but later died of his injuries.The accident happened just before 6pm yesterday outside Island Construction on the sharp corner where Middle Road meets Parsons Lane.Health Minister Zane DeSilva, who is also president of Island Construction, said he was devastated by the loss of a long-time employee and childhood friend.The crash victim, who has a daughter aged about 18, had worked at Island Construction “on and off” for most of his life. His latest stint with the company had seen him working as a dispatcher for about ten years.Mr DeSilva, who is currently off island, said: “It’s such a shock, I really feel for his wife and daughter.“I’d known him all my life, we’d been friends since I was about five or six. We grew up together.“He was such a great guy.”Allan DeSilva, a partner at Island Construction, said he was in “complete shock” and employees were struggling to come to terms with the death.He said: “I just want to wish his wife and daughter my deepest condolences.“He talked about his family so much. He was very, very close to his daughter. He was so proud of her, he talked about her everyday.”Police officers and the firefighters attended the single-vehicle accident. The victim’s badly-damaged red Sym motorbike could be seen laying in the road.Motorists are believed to have tried to give first-aid to the victim. Shocked employees from Island Construction also paid their condolences at the scene.A section of Middle Road remained cordoned off as forensics officers took photos of the bike. Firefighters then hosed down the road and cleaned up the scene.There were lengthy traffic delays as police redirected vehicles. The road was reopened around 8pm.The man becomes the second road fatality on Bermuda’s roads in 2011. Avid sailor Vershon Simmons, 18, died on March 5 after an accident on Harbour Road, Paget.The Royal Gazette is not publishing the latest victim’s name at this time because, as of last night, police were still in the process of informing his next of kin. Police are expected to confirm the man’s name in due course.A police spokesman said: “Police responded to a report of a road traffic collision that took place at 6pm on Middle Road and Parsons Lane.“As a result a 49-year-old Devonshire man was taken to KEMH where he was subsequently pronounced dead.”Any witnesses to the accident should call Bermuda Police on 295-0011.
