Skippers all set for Old Boys’ battle
Opposing skippers Kevin Saunders and Randall (Bubba) Woolridge are confident their teams can win tomorrow’s Harris Bay and Somerset Old Boys charity match at Somerset Cricket Club.Somerset won last year’s contest by four wickets to claim bragging rights for the first time in four years. But Harris Bay are determined to reclaim the cup and feel they have the firepower in their arsenal to pull it off this year.Somerset have bolstered their ranks with the addition of former Bermuda and Somerset Cup Match batsman Jeff Richardson to a squad skipper Saunders reckons will be equal to the task.“We can handle them because we have a well balanced team with a lot of experience in players like Perry Maybury, John Tucker, Gladstone (Sad) Brown and Brian Brangman,” he said.Shawn Roberts and Danzell Dill are the other two new faces in Somerset’s team this year.Harris Bay are without opening batsmen Wayne Smith and Maxwell Mussen who have been replaced by all -rounders Noel Gibbons and William Weldon.Harris Bay skipper Woolridge believes fielding could be the key to his team’s bid for success.“They say ‘catches win matches’ and that’s going to be the bottom line,” he said. “It’s just a matter of holding our catches.”As for the two new additions to the team, Woolridge said: “Noel and Willie Weldon are two good all- rounders and with their experience along with the other guys it makes a very good blend.”In order to be eligible to play players from opposing teams paid a fee of $60 to go towards local charity Tomorrow’s Voices along with other donations collected during the match.“You play hard to win but if you don’t win you are still a winner because you participated for a worthy cause,” Woolridge said.“Tomorrow’s Voices are the biggest winners on the day.”Tomorrow’s charity match starts at 11am.Somerset: Kevin Saunders (capt), Perry Maybury, John Tucker, Marc Bean, Gladstone Brown, Conrad Lister, Anthony Bailey, Shawn Roberts, Anthony Burchall, Gladstone Robinson, Vivien Simons, Danzell Dill, Brian Brangman, Bernard Brangman, Jeff Richardson.Harris Bay: Randall Woolridge (capt), Herdon Smith, Eugene Simons, Albert Jenkins, Terry Smith, Noel Gibbons, Dennis Wainwright Jr, Jerry Jones, William Weldeon, Andre Smith, Brendon Woolridge, John Richardson, Colin (Bo) Smith, Millet Bean, Kurt Wade.
