Big fines for teenager
three months in prison.
Police brought Kenwade Kris Robinson, of St. Monica's Road, Pembroke, before Magistrates' Court last week after seven warrants had been issued for his arrest.
Robinson pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and without a driver's or vehicle licence on September 20, 1997.
He also admitted to driving without a licence, dangerous driving, speeding at 68 kph, and failing to stop for Police on April 8, 1998.
Junior Crown counsel Veronica Gordon told the court Robinson led Police on a high-speed chase through traffic in 1998.
The pursuit ended when Robinson lost control of his cycle and was captured as he tried to escape on foot.
He reportedly told officers: "I was scared. You guys scared me.'' And as the teen was chased on foot, a thief allegedly stole the 50cc Yamaha cycle he had abandoned at the roadside.
In addition to the fines, Magistrate Archibald Warner banned Robinson from driving all motor vehicles for two years.
In court Robinson said he had been kicked out of high school and went "around the neighbourhood cutting people's grass'' for money.
He went on to say he lived with his mother and grandmother, and had not expected the fines to be so large.
Mr. Warner noted that "there should be another way of dealing with'' young people who seemed "wholly contemptuous of dealing with the system''.
He ordered Robinson to pay $200 yesterday and the remainder of his fines by March 5.
