Both the National Education Association president Mr. Keith Geiger and retired St. Francis Xavier University professor Dr. Dorothy Thompson will be the keynote speakers at the conference to be held at Mount St. Agnes Academy.

Dr. Thompson was a principal at the defunct Prospect Secondary School for Girls.

In addition to the two speakers, a host of local and overseas educators will make presentations at the conference.

There will also be workshops on the Jason Project, violence against teachers, recognising signs of abuse in children, assisting families, and hands-on printing in art.

The conference will run from 8.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR SHEILA GAINES OBT Memorial service for Sheila Gaines A memorial service will be held in Bermuda later this month for the wife of former US Consul General Mr. Ebersole Gaines.

Mrs. Sheila Gaines died in Washington last week after a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was remembered by the many friends she made while living in Bermuda from 1990 to 1993 as a wonderful personality and an athlete.

The memorial service will be held at the Anglican Cathedral on Church Street on November 27.

It will begin a 4 p.m.

COUPLE ARRESTED FOR STEALING WALL TILES CRM Couple arrested for stealing wall tiles Police yesterday arrested a Sandys couple on suspicion of stealing wall tiles.

An office on patrol in the Mangrove Bay Road areas saw the couple -- a 33-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man -- carrying a cardboard box around 2 a.m.

On examining the box, the officer found a large quantity of pink wall tiles which the couple claimed to have found.

They were arrested on suspicion of stealing the tiles and taken to Somerset Police Station.

Inquiries into the incident were continuing.

MAN FINED, OFF THE ROAD UNTIL 1998 CTS Man fined, off the road until 1998 Three speeding tickets yesterday cost a 22-year-old Smith's Parish man $1,250.

Daman K. Rabain, of Somersall Road, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to speeding on a cycle at 78 kph, 57 kph and 60 kph on three separate occasions.

Magistrate the Wor. Edward King fined Rabain $210 for riding at 57 kph, and ordered him to pay $290 and not ride any motor vehicles for six months for travelling at 60 kph.

Mr. King also fined Rabain $750 for speeding at 78 kph and disqualified him from riding all motor vehicles for two years.

The disqualification periods are to run consecutively.

Rabain therefore can not ride any motor vehicles until May, 1998.

HOSPITAL STAFF AGREE TO PAY DEAL HOS Hospital staff agree to pay deal Hundreds of hospital staff have agreed a two-year pay deal. The agreement means that 700 professional, technical, supervisory and clerical staff will get a pay hike of 3.2 per cent this year and 3.1 per cent in 1996.

The deal was thrashed out by a negotiating team from the Bermuda Public Services Association, headed by General Secretary Mr. Eugene Blakeney, and representatives of the Bermuda Hospitals Board, led by Executive Director Mrs.

Sheila Manderson.

A joint statement from the two organisations said: "Both organisations were pleased with the outcome of the talks and pledged to work as partners over the next two years to deliver the best service possible for patients and other users of the hospital facilities and services.'' NOT GUILTY PLEA TO POSSESSING COCAINE CTS Not guilty plea to possessing cocaine Twenty-three-year-old Suzanne Whitecross is to stand trial after pleading not guilty to possession of cocaine.

Whitecross, of 23 Orange Valley, Devonshire, appeared in Magistrates' Court this week when she denied a charge of possession of a controlled drug on August 2, this year, in Pembroke.

She was remanded on $500 bail, with a surety in like sum, to appear for trial on April 15 next year.

MAN TO STAND TRIAL ON THREE CHARGES CTS Man to stand trial on three charges Jermaine Pearman will stand trial at Magistrates' Court after pleading not guilty to three charges.

Pearman, 22, of Pearman's Hill, Warwick, denied two charges of possession of cannabis and one charge of obstructing a Police officer.

He will reappear before Magistrates' on April 16, next year, for trial. He was granted $750 bail with one surety in a like sum.

`DYNAMIC SPEAKERS' WILL SPEAK TO AA CON `Dynamic speakers' will speak to AA More than 70 people, including two "dynamic speakers'', will come to Bermuda this month for Alcoholics Anonymous' annual convention.

The convention, to be held at The Princess, will take place on November 24, 25, and 26.

A husband and wife team, Mr. Peter C. and Dawn C. from Reston, Virginia, will address the AA and Al Anon memberships over that weekend.

The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking, organisers said.

There are no dues or fees for AA membership.

AA's primary purpose is to help alcoholics achieve sobriety.
