A feast for eyes, ears and taste buds
By Vejay SteedeThe latest phenomenon in interactive dinner theatre to hit Bermuda is none other than the whimsical ‘Death by Disco’ at Shine’s House of Music and Entertainment (HOME).The show is a briskly paced, laugh-a-minute feast of floral prints, fabulous afros, and funk! The seven member cast is comprised of some of Bermuda’s very best comedic actors, and the interactive theme allows for quite a bit of audience participation. The show itself is a wacky murder mystery based around a hotly contested disco dancing competition.Shine’s HOME is transformed into Shine’s Danceteria for the evening, and the show opens at 7.30pm sharp with the introduction of four excited dance champ wannabes and the inimitable emcee and deejay Boogie Man (played by Shine Hayward himself).Kathleen O’Riley (Nashanti Bailey) is the reigning disco queen who is defiantly holding the ambitious challengers at bay while waiting for her dance partner, the sinuous Toni Maroni (Nadanja Bailey) to arrive.Angela Moroni (DeAzha Chambers) is the Lady McBeth of the story; an ambitious supporting character who would do anything she has to do to get the lead role. Angela is determined to take the crown from Kathleen and Toni (her big brother), and drags her clueless partner Vinnie Elbodini (Jah Simmons) across the stage all night in an adrenalin drenched effort to usurp the disco king and queen of Shine’s Discoteria.Wally Papo (Raymond Johnson) is the scrub who wants to be a dancer but just doesn’t have the moves to pull it off; or does he?Each character is introduced through a fierce dialogue about who is going to win this year’s competition, a wonderful part of the show that reveals Kathleen’s insecurity, Angela’s desperation, Vinnie’s oblivion, and Wally’s innocent charm.Once Toni crashes the scene after about 15 minutes, the intensity rises. Then the heat boils over once Theresa Maria Garcia (Deborah Joell) gets involved. See Theresa is Toni’s new dance partner, and the reason why he and Kathleen haven’t been ‘practicing’ in the run up to their defence of the crown.Wally steps in to become Kathleen’s partner after much consternation and convincing, and the contest shuffles, hustles, and bus-stops on through much drama, until Toni takes a devastating fall and dies. But how does such an accomplished and graceful dancer fall to his death while disco dancing? It’s got to be foul play right? But who dun it?The rest of the show features some impressive disco dancing, an interactive who dun it audience questionnaire, relationship drama, dark revelations about each character and their respective motives for wanting Toni dead, a hilarious investigation by Toni Moroni Sr (Toni and Angela’s father who is a retired Police Detective and is played by Nadanja Bailey), and a double-barrelled twist ending. The actors each deliver superb performances, making this delightful show an excellent entertainment value. The included food and drink are enhancements to the experience, but certainly not highlights (although I do recommend the green, swizzle-inspired ‘Moon Shine’ cocktail special). The show will run every Monday and Thursday night right through the summer and into October. It is a fantastic locally produced event, and a stellar example of high quality interactive dinner theatre. Don’t miss it if you don’t have to.
