Boost for Island tourism on the World Wide Web

Bermuda's tourist properties will soon get an Internet boost as publishing company International Voyager Media (IVM) prepares launch of its World Wide Web site.

Hotels and advertisers associated with Tourist Publications (Bermuda) Ltd.'s comprehensive Vacation Bermuda guide book will be a part of the new IVM web site, Tourist Publications managing director Douglas Stevens said.

Tourist Publications designs and produces Vacation Bermuda which is distributed to 3,791 rooms in over 40 hotels and guest houses across the Island.

IVM prints the Bermuda guide book as well as several others for Caribbean and US tourist destinations.

The web site is to be completed January 31, IVM Interactive president Jack Benoff said.

"We're looking to leverage the relationship we have in print,'' he said. He estimated about 50 million people see IVM's printed publications.

Under the expanded partnership, Tourism Publications pays Internet costs from advertising revenue, Mr. Stevens said.

Editorial writing, daily news features, photography, history, road maps, sightseeing trips and sports are among topics covered about the various IVM web site destinations.

Visitors to the site will also be able to contribute comments about their vacations.

In about three months, hotels will be able to use the site to auction off rooms to bolster occupancy rates during slow times while advertisers will be able to auction items, Mr. Benoff added.

There are about 1,000 hotels in the site.

Web surfers can hyperlink to a hotel's existing home page, Tourist Publications account executive Toni Burrows said.

The Tourism Publications Vacation Bermuda guide book is due out in April, she added.
