Medjugorje evangelist to visit Island

Bermudians can gain special insight into the alleged apparitions of the Virgin Mary in the war torn town of Medjugorje, Bosnia-Hercegovina.

Well known in Bermuda due to the humanitarian efforts of the Medjugorje Peace Plan, the town has hosted millions since the apparitions were observed by six Croat youths in June, 1981.

The hamlet of Medjugorje sees some 5,000 pilgrims a day. The apparitions are still under investigation by the Vatican.

American author Wayne Weible will speak next week to Roman Catholics and non-Catholics about the apparitions and conversion at St. Patrick's Church, Mount St. Agnes and at St. Theresa's Cathedral.

Mr. Weible -- formerly a "lukewarm'' Protestant and now a Roman Catholic convert -- has dedicated his life to telling the world about the Virgin Mary and the apparitions.

His first book "Miracle at Medjugorje'' has sold 50 million copies since it was first published in September, 1986.

"The message coming from the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje is for all faiths,'' he said recently. "Not just for Catholics, or for that matter just for Christians.'' Mr. Weible added: "God is reaching out to all people, for we are all his children.'' He has made 21 trips to Medjugorje and has become a close friend of the visionaries, and spends his entire time writing and lecturing on Medjugorje.

A trained journalist, Mr. Weible has appeared on numerous US nationally syndicated programmes and newscasts including the Oprah Winfrey, Sally Jessy Raphael, and the Mother Angelica shows.

After watching a videotape of the apparitions in 1985, he had the urge to write about the events and devote his life to spreading the basic message of reconciliation with God.

On Monday at 7.30 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church, there will be Rosary and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Mr. Weible followed by a reception.

On Tuesday there will be a Mass at 7.30 p.m. followed by a talk by Mr. Weible.

At 8.30 a.m. Mr. Weible will talk with MSA students and at 7.30 p.m. there will be a Mass.

Mr. Weible will talk to the youth at St. Theresa's Hall at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday.

He is being hosted by St. Patrick's Church and the Medjugorje Peace Plan Group, which has sent 15 care containers to Bosnia-Hercegovina, Montserrat, Honduras, Jamaica, and most recently to Kosovo Albanian refugees since 1993.
