Traffic unit has not been scrapped

Unit has been scrapped.

A Police spokeswoman yesterday issued a statement to the Press following comments made during a radio talk show at the weekend.

"The Commissioner of Police, Jean Jacques Lemay, would like to assure members of the public that the unit, commonly known as the motorcycle patrol section, has not been disbanded but has simply been integrated into the traffic sections of operations,'' the statement read.

"Comments heard on recent talk shows today indicate some public concern and apprehension about what was perceived would be a lack of Police presence by this very important unit.

"However, in order to provide a more effective and efficient service to members of the motoring public, the integration of these officers into traffic will now mean that the visible presence of the motorcycles will be available around the clock.

"The duties and responsibilities of these officers will remain the same. Mr.

Lemay will be monitoring the situation closely to see if adjustments to the new schedule are warranted.''
