Youngsters to travel to Martinique
compete in the upcoming Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) Track and Field championships in Martinique this month.
The meet is in its eighth year and was the result of the CUT's recognition of the need to provide the young athletes aged eight to 14 with some regional competition.
These particular championships were designed to bring together the students and teachers of the Caribbean and Bermuda for a few days of friendly competition, camaraderie and cooperation.
The championships have been a breeding ground for some of the Caribbean's most outstanding track and field athletes. Many have moved on to the CAC Juniors, Carifta Games, Pan Am Juniors and ultimately the Olympics.
One athlete who comes to mind is sprinter Obadele Thompson of Barbados who has a Bermudian mother, who is related to the Caisey family here. Thompson will run in the 100 and 200 metres at the Olympic Games.
The countries expected to have representatives this year are Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Jamaica, Montserrat, Trinidad, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, Martinique, Bahamas and Bermuda.
The athletes representing Bermuda come from East End Primary, Purvis Primary, Warwick Academy, Elliott, Spice Valley and Clearwater. They were selected on their achievements at their inter-school sports finals.
There is a limit of one athlete event but the athletes are not limited to how many events they can enter.
The track meet will be held on July 8 and 9 and the local team, headed by coaches Bill Euler and Florence Sharpe and also including Mike Charles and Anthony Wolfe, will leave on July 6 and return on the 12th. Team picture on page 16 .
