Opposition MP Dr. Ewart Brown is holding a news conference today to address what he believes is ``harassment'' of local teenagers by Police investigating
A youngster taken into Police custody over the matter and his parents will be in attendance, Dr. Brown said in a statement last night.
They will discuss concerns over the way detectives allegedly treated the young man, Dr. Brown said, adding the family lived in his Warwick West constituency.
"The on-going investigation by the Bermuda Police Force into the Nationalist publication has seen a number of young people placed into custody -- held for a few hours and then released uncharged,'' he claimed.
"This easily lends itself to intimidation by the Police.
Dr. Brown said he, the "harassed'' teenager and his parents would jointly be calling for "an appropriate community response''.
The Force's handling of the case also raised questions over whether its members were "appearing to build positive community relations'', he said. The fliers have been linked to the Nationalist magazine, which is put out by the National Youth Alliance.
Bermuda College student Jhon Gibbons was this month arrested in connection with the fliers, detained and released on Police bail.
The group "Bermudians Concerned About Democracy In Bermuda'', which includes businessman Mr. Manders Ingham, and the National Liberal Party criticised his arrest, raising concerns for freedom of speech.
The controversial fliers were publicised the day before the Queen arrived here for a two-day visit on March 9. They called on black high school and college students to boycott the visit, calling the Queen a "syphilitic whore'' and a symbol of racism.
Dr. Brown's news conference will take place at 12.45 p.m. at the Leopards Club in Hamilton.
