A decision difficult to swallow

Rebecca Middleton

April 8, 2014

Dear Sir,

I had hoped that I was not the only one who believed that the Government’s decision to bar a Canadian film crew from doing a documentary on the unsolved murder of Rebecca Middleton was wrong and now I know that I do not stand alone. I hope that many others will raise their voice in objection and that the Government will do an “about face.”

Even Mr Fahy admits that: “Rebecca Middleton’s murder was a brutal, horrific event that highlighted faults within Bermuda’s justice system.”

Mr Fahy’s reason for not granting work permits was on the basis of reputational risks for Bermuda. There were flaws in our justice system and the one who was guilty of such an atrocious crime was never charged and yet we are more concerned with protecting the good name of Bermuda as a vacation destination, I find that difficult to swallow.

The decision of Mr Fahy will come back to haunt him and our department of tourism as indicated by the recent headlines ‘Barred film crew story goes around the world.’ Not being willing to give a work permit to this film crew will do as much for Bermuda’s reputation as a tourist destination as the recent story of dumping raw untreated sewage into the water that caresses our beaches.
