Local DJs impress with their inventive skills, showmanship

The threat of an impending storm was enough to move the Heineken Green Synergy Bermuda Final indoors (to the fabulous Spinning Wheel Entertainment Complex), but it was never going to be enough to halt the crowning of a champion!

A modest crowd filed into the Spinning Wheel on Friday night to witness the ascension of Gary ?DJ Kaos? Davis to the status of Bermuda Champion.

This means that he will represent the island at the Caribbean competition in the Bahamas to determine who will be the 2006 Heineken Green Synergy Champion.

The festivities started at sometime around 12.30 a.m. Saturday morning, after an extended (and excellent) set from the brilliant Shock-n-Lust.

Last year?s Bermuda representative, DJ Styles took the stage first, offering a dazzling array of cuts, scratches, and thunderous breaks.

Styles exhibited impressive technical skill, and a Hip-Hop selection that would stand up against any offered on Friday night.

He also added a heaping spoonful of showmanship when he closed his 15 minute set by disrobing while feverishly mixing the Nelly favourite ?Hot in Here? (he would wait until the girl mentions taking off all her clothes and then remove an item).

This caused quite a stir amongst the audience as it demonstrated a very high level of skill and precision, and when the set was done, he walked off the stage in his vest and boxers to a chorus of cheers, leaving Kaos with a decidedly hard act to follow!

Follow he did though, and before long, the judges were trying to figure out how they would ever choose a winner between these two.

Kaos was just as technically impressive as Styles, his selection was very similar, and he certainly injected imagination into his presentation as well.

Kaos learned from the field in last year?s Caribbean Championships, taking every opportunity available to highlight the title sponsors of the event.

At one point he slowed the music down to a crawl, held the track still, and took a swig of his drink (guess what the drink was), followed by a swift wipe of the mouth with a Heineken towel, and a perfect transition back into the mix. The crowd went wild!

Kaos impressed because he was very crowd oriented, giving the lucky witnesses quite a few moments to marvel at and remember.

After his 15 minutes were up, it was clear that the Champion would be decided between he and Styles, but that does not mean that Vybez Alliance did not show up.

Indeed the young man did show up. In fact, he delivered a nice little set, filled with eclectic music mixes, creative shout outs, and mounds of potential.

I am still quite amazed that the kid actually had the courage to play a mix of Nirvana?s magnificent ?Smells Like Teen Spirit? and Baby Cham?s anthemic ?Ghetto Story?. If you are familiar with those two tunes, I?m sure you can imagine the level of my shock and awe.

Very nicely done young man! Unfortunately, I had the distinct feeling that I was the only person in attendance on Friday night who was familiar with the classic Nirvana instrumental. Well, at least one person appreciated the effort.

I also appreciated the fact that young Mr. Vybez Alliance shouted out to, and actually pronounced Barmuvinjam correctly. Again, very nicely done young man.

In the end, Vybez was the second runner up, Styles was the first runner up, and Kaos emerged as the Champion. I cannot say that this decision was incorrect, but I will say that there was not a whole lot separating Styles and Kaos.

Last year?s Champion will certainly be back again next year, and this year?s Champion will undoubtedly represent our little island home very well on the international stage.

Kudos to Burrows and Lightbourne for running a very impressive event throughout the summer, and to the folks at Heineken for having the vision to reward the efforts and skills of the Caribbean DJ fraternity; good job!
