His truck was stuck so... he set off the fire alarm

A 33-year-old man was fined $1,500 for setting off fire alarms at the Fairmont Southampton resort, causing the hotel to be evacuated.Francisco Fagundo told Magistrates' Court he pulled the alarms because his delivery truck had been blocked in by a shuttle bus.Crown counsel Cindy Clarke said hotel staff saw Fagundo pull the alarms after demanding that somebody move the bus at 1pm on August 7.After the hotel was evacuated and the bus moved, Fagundo was pointed out to hotel security as he got back into his truck. A guard then blocked his way.Fagundo continued to drive the truck, pushing the guard aside. He drove off, but was later identified from the vehicle's registration number.Fagundo admitted the offence under interview at Hamilton Police Station on January 4.Yesterday he told Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo that hotel security staff laughed when he asked them to move the bus.He said: “At the time, this was the smarter thing to do.”Mr Tokunbo told him: “It was a very dumb thing to do, and very serious as well.”He fined Fagundo $1,500 to be paid by February 18.
