Young bibliophiles will be treated to a book reading this weekend by award winning author of children’s book “The Blue Lobster”.Author Robin Taylor-Chiarello will take young readers ages four to eight through the inspirational story at The Book Cellar in St George’s on Sunday at 3pm.She was determined to write the children’s book after hearing a radio announcement that a blue lobster had been caught off the coast in Maine. She has used “The Blue Lobster” story as an avenue to talk about the importance of accepting and celebrating differences. An estimated one in 2 million lobsters are born blue.Their unusual colouring is caused by a genetic mutation, which causes the crustacean to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein. The rhyming story focuses around blue lobster Mr Homarus Americanus as he tries to get the other lobster to be his friend. He tries wearing silly clothes and showing him his funky dance style, but they still won’t play with him because he is different. One day he is caught is a trap, but the people who find him love his rare bright blue colour. Instead of putting him in a lobster pot, they make him a celebrity.Kristin White, an owner of The Book Cellar, said she was excited about the upcoming event and hoped children walked away understanding the need to celebrate our differences. She met Mrs Taylor-Chiarello on one of her recent visits to St George’s and was given a copy of the book and asked if she wanted to carry it.“We were hoping to have [Robin] do a reading before but it didn’t pan out,” Ms White said. “She contacted us earlier this month and said she’d be back in Bermuda mid-May, so we were eager to arrange a reading.“We’re very happy for Robin that her book has won awards, and are pleased to have her in the store.“And really, any book that captures children’s imaginations, has a great lesson, and inspires reading is what makes us excited.”Mrs Taylor-Chiarello has worked as a primary school art and art history teacher; she has enjoyed a 20-year career designing healthcare environments.Dueane Dill, of The Book Cellar, said they were excited to welcome the author to their space. He said: “She loves St George’s and on Sundays, the town is a vibrant place to be, with our Olde Towne Market, so we thought it would be great to have this event here on a Sunday.“Hopefully, residents will come down to support the reading, meet Robin, and of course, enjoy St George’s on a Sunday.”“The Blue Lobster” has won six awards, including a Silver Mom’s Choice Award and an accolade at the Paris Book Festival. For more information on the book reading contact The Book Cellar through bookcellar@logic.bm or 297-0448.
