Drugs strategy chief's salary will be $75,000
anti-drugs offensive.
It has been launched before this month's political debate on a National Drugs Strategy group.
Government is likely to table legislation to form the group during this session of Parliament.
The role of the chief executive officer will be crucial in running the new body. Two people have already applied for the post.
Applications must be in by March 1, and an appointment is likely before the end of that month.
Mr. Alastair Macdonald, chairman of the interim steering committee of the strategy, said the CEO would play a major part in tackling drug and alcohol abuse.
"We will be looking for an individual with strong experience and skill in policy development, programme implementation and management.
"This individual must have excellent communication skills for he or she will play a key role in mobilising the community to deal with the drug and alcohol problems.'' He added the role would be varied, including the management of the group's office, ensuring executive decisions are acted on, and speaking with community organisations and the Press. "It will be an extremely broadly-based job.'' Mr. Macdonald said he was confident a Bermudian could be found.
"We would welcome applications from qualified Bermudians not only living in Bermuda, but also from Bermudians living and working in the field overseas.
"We would urge the public to inform any qualified members or friends who are living overseas of this opportunity.
"I would be extremely disappointed if we can't find a suitable Bermudian.'' The appointment will be made by a committee, which includes chairman Mr.
Macdonald, Mr. Edward Ball, Dr. John Cann, Mr. Vic Garcia, Ms Michelle Khaldun, Mrs. Lucille Parker, Mr. Robert Rego, and Mr. John Riihiluoma.
Mr. Macdonald said he expected the new group to be running by mid-April or mid-May.
It would mean the dissolution of the 24-member interim steering committee.
Many members are likely to be appointed to the strategy team.
"I think it will be a good thing for the sake of continuity,'' said Mr.
Macdonald, adding the group was hoping to have a $1.2 million budget for its first year.
