Big chance for under 16 footballers
Three of thirty up and coming football U-16 players will travel to the Caribbean later this year courtesy of the 2013 Digicel Kick Start programme and Chelsea Football Club Foundation.The local players were put through their paces yesterday by coaches from the English giants, David Monk, Russell William Banyard and Kane Nicholas Cowburn.The three selected will get a chance to rub shoulders with the best players in the Caribbean and Central America in October in Barbados.“We would like to get three players to represent Bermuda in Barbados, we want the players to express themselves and this is their chance,” said Monk.“We want them to be able to prove that they can play with the best in the world and an avenue like this is a good supplier for these players to have an opportunity to move to the next level.“The programme is one of the best in the world, they will be put through their paces for three and a half hours and have technical sessions that will benefit each player.”The initiative, making its debut on the Island, will be the first led by Chelsea FC Foundation coaches, who have already visited ten countries in the Caribbean and Central America in search of the region’s top 33 youngsters. This is the 11th and final destination for the coaches.Digicel Bermuda reached out to local high schools and requested that they submit names of their top under-16 players.After being put through rigorous training sessions from the three coaches throughout the day, three of the young football enthusiasts from the Bermuda leg of the Digicel Kick Start Clinics will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend a one-week training camp at the Digicel Academy.BAA President John Doran said: “The BAA is delighted to be partnering with Digicel in this regard. This is a fantastic opportunity being afforded to Bermuda’s youth from Digicel and we’re very happy to help the community in any way we can.”
