Lewis brothers cane St. George's

An unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 104 in 86 minutes between brothers Jason and Darrin Lewis lifted Nationals to their first win of the season yesterday at National Sports Club.

Jason hit 84 not out off 118 balls in 187 minutes from nine boundaries while his captain finished with 38 not out off 57 balls to complete an impressive fightback by Nationals after St. George's had them 54 for three by the 16th over.

But, as veterans Jeff Pitcher and Chris Wright watched with their pads on, the Lewis brothers carried the team to victory with Jason, though disciplined in his best knock of the season, being dropped by Graham Fox on 45 and then again by the usually safe hands of Eugene Foggo and Clay Smith after reaching his half-century.

After openers Winston Simmons and Gary Knight fell in the third and sixth overs with just 15 on the board, Jason Lewis and Mark Ray (16) added 39 for the third wicket to keep Nationals in contention, Ray falling to a catch at slip by Wendell Smith off Eugene Foggo.

Earlier Clay Smith, in his first league knock of the season, led the St.

George's batting with 43 in 147 minutes while Foggo scored 27, tail-ender Kenny Phillips 23 and Troy Hall 17 not out in his first match of the season.

Hall and Phillips added 34 for the ninth wicket in moving the score from 117 to 151.

Graham Fox was dismissed for his second straight first-ball duck as spinner Bruce Perinchief led the Nationals bowling with four for 42 from 21 overs while Wright, Ray and Darrin Lewis all took two wickets with Wright also bowling economically, giving up just 21 runs in 15.2 overs.

Willow Cuts 119 Western Stars 120-7 Dwayne Steede continued to impress with his new club and opener Gregory Sampson batted staunchly as Western Stars crept precariously to their second Open League victory at St. John's field.

Steede claimed four for 32 in a 10-over spell that reduced Cuts 44 for four and kept them on the defensive.

Trevor Dickinson waved an aggressive bat as he hit two fours and a six in a team-high knock of 27. Charlie Fox was 24 not out in an innings that included two sixes. Rodney Fubler made 15, Vance Gilbert 13 and skipper Dexter Basden 11.

Arnold Manders was introduced late in the Stars attack and claimed three for 15 from eight overs while left-arm spinner Wayne Richardson took three for 41 from 12.4.

Defending such a small total, Cuts needed every break they could get and a few dubious umpiring decisions quickly had Stars struggling at 23 for three.

But the home team were rewarded for Sampson's patience as he batted through six partners in two-and-a-half hours for 35. He hit just one four and was credited for a five after an overthrow went to the boundary.

Sampson and Jeff Richardson (27) put on 40 for the fifth wicket and then the opener added 24 with Cleon Scotland (11) as Stars reached the century mark and sensed victory.

Two quick wickets made for some late drama, but new batsman Mike Jones struck two crisp fours off Rodney Fubler to ease Stars' nerves.

Spinner Vivian Simons returned Cuts' best figures of two for 24 from 13 overs while Rodney Fubler had two for 39 off 14.4.

RARE MOMENT -- Willow Cutss' Trevor Dickinson takes a defensive pause during his aggressive 27 against Western Stars at St. John's field. Stars won by three wickets.
