It's hats off to St. George's Kiwanis!

Tom Moore's Tavern in Walsingham proved to be the ideal setting on Sunday for the presentation by the Kiwanis Club of St. George's of its annual Tropical Tea Break. It proved to be an all-round fabulous event, highlighted by a hat and fashion show, good entertainment, fellowship and most delectable food.

The event was well attended. Among the distinguished guests were Dame Jennifer Smith; Mrs. Cindy Swan, wife of Opposition Leader Kim Swan; and top civil servant Judith Hall Bean.

Judith gave a witty and enlightening speech on the protocols of women and their hats. She was followed by Mrs. Joan Moore with a sparkling 'tea talk' about her pastime resulting in private collection of nearly 500 distinctive tea pots from all over the world.

Guests and patrons paid $40 to $100 a ticket for their tea plus liberal amounts for expensive raffle prizes, with proceeds benefiting the Kiwanians' community and charitable efforts.

The Kiwanian charged with overall responsibility for organising the tea was Corrine Simons, who said she was ably assisted by Marie Kent-Smith. Mistress of ceremonies was Mrs. Denise Trew, managing director of Eve's Cycle Shop and Enterprises.

Mrs. Trew, a past Kiwanis president, has long been dubbed island-wide as The Hat Lady because of the distinctive hats she wears going about her everyday and night activities.

Now she has added a Millinery Shop to her to her All about Eve Ladies' Boutique in St. George's. Models from all over the island displayed creations from 'Eve's' as well as from Cecci's Boutique in Somerset and 27th Century Boutique in Hamilton.

Additionally, some modelled creations from their own personal collections. There were adult and junior modelling sections. Honours for most beautiful in the show went to Qwendolyn Simmons, who is seen with some of the other winners.

Judging for the hat competition was in the hands of past president Evadne Caesar, Marie Kent-Smith and Dana Mello.

Randy Lambert, of Tempo, sparked the entertainment throughout the afternoon. Renditions were also from Raqueesha Binns, Rochelle Simons, The Souls Sisters and the K-Kids, five youngsters from the East End schools where the St. George's Kiwanians sponsor K-Clubs. The Soul Sisters are all senior high school students, named Jahlae Albuoy, Chelsea Warren, Kaelyn Castle and Zianna Warren. Aged 12, they have been singing for the past five years, when they formed while attending Paget Primary School. Their a cappella renditions were well received.

Photos by Ira Philip show some of the many models and prize winners, who included Beverley Simmons, Louise Matthews, Joyce Dyce, Tonya Smith (Miss Big & Beautiful); Raqueesha Binns, Severina Saliba, Margaret Giloth, Brenda Mogul; also Dorothy Trott, Devena Lightbourne, the MC Denise Trew; club president Scarlett Pottinger; Dame Jennifer Smith, Joan Moore with flowers; Cindy Swan, wife of Opposition Leader Kim Swan, and daughter Cinzy. Also seen are The Soul Sisters and The Five K-Kids.
