Hayward strike gives St.George’s the edge
Southampton Rangers 0St George’s 1A first-half strike from Jarreau Hayward was enough to give St George’s all three points against Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval.Hayward’s goal came in the 42nd minute of a mostly dull affair at the Oval, although some late drama kept the fans entertained until the final whistle. What made the match all the more fascinating was the surprise selection of Allan Douglas jr in goal for St George’s, with the striker having to sacrifice his goalscoring ability to help the team.“I’m pleased with our performance today, it was a bit of a struggle but in the end we came out on top and that is what matters,” said coach Richard Todd. “Allan Douglas played in goal for us today and he showed his athleticism, willingness to help the team and his commitment to his team-mates so that was a great things for us.“It was a good score, we knew that coming here it would be a challenge with a small field and the ability to apply pressure quickly on it, we adjusted our game and got the go-ahead goal.”In a game that was far from entertaining for the better part of the first half, it was Colts who took the lead after some nifty work down the flank from Jahron Dickinson who found Hayward whose scuffed shot snuck inside the far post.To be fair to Rangers ‘keeper Sean Perinchief it wasn’t much he could do, blinded by bodies in the area when Dickinson cut his pass back.It wouldn’t be until the final 15 minutes of the game that the next clear cut chance would come with the introduction of Rangers substitute Kyle Jones adding another dimension to his side’s attack with his never-say-die attitude. With the striker holding up the ball and allowing team-mates to flow down the flanks, the first real chance for the hosts fell to Ijahmon Mallory, but the inspirational defender sailed his shot high over the target from six yards.Jones than tried his luck as well, driving a left footed strike hard and low that Douglas did well to push around his near post.Looking for the all-important equaliser, Rangers found themselves short at the back numerous times, with chances falling to Jahron Dickinson and Angelo Cannonier who could have put the match beyond doubt if they would have hit their intended target.Fellow striker Clay Darrell also had a tough time of things in front of goal, making a hash of a few opportunities while his decision making let him down on other occasions before being substituted. The hard work and determination from the East Enders held out in the end, grabbing a clean sheet and a league ‘double’ over Rangers, with the three points moving them eight points clear of the relegation zone.Rangers remain in eighth, five points above St David’s who hold down the final drop spot.“I liked that we closed the match down well, they had a few chances at the end but that is how the game goes and we can walk away with three points,” added Todd.“This is what you have to do, go on the road and get results and it was important to get results against those around us in the table.“When you play these teams you have to try and make the most of your chances, when you look at the Somerset result on Friday night, it gave us incentive to get on with our job.“As you get further away from the relegation zone you can breathe easy for a minute and figure out what you are going to target, and with this win we are pushing further away from the two spots that will go down so we can set ourselves new goals for the rest of the season.”Southampton Rangers: S Perinchief, A Russell, M Williams, I Mallory, M Tankard(K Jones,57), K Simmons, E Stoneham(K Astwood,44), M Burch, V Perinchief, C Castle, G Johnson(R Lowe,44)Subs not used: J Caisey, Y BeanSt George’s: A Douglas, J Simmons, E Signor, D Signor, J Hayward, A Cannonier(M Crane,83), C Durham, C Darrell(J Carlington,63), J Dickinson, J Bassett(J Hayward,81), G WadeSubs not used: K SmithYellow: C Durham, J SimmonsGoal: J Hayward,42Referee: A MouchetteMan of the Match: J Hayward
