Russell’s late strike earns Rangers win
Southampton Rangers 4Somerset Trojans 3Dennis Russell’s injury time goal settled things as Southampton Rangers earned three points in a seven-goal thriller with Somerset Trojans at Southampton Oval yesterday.Russell came off the bench in the 70 minute to score the winner in what was a frantic finale to the match after Ijahmon Mallory, McQuinn Burch, and Sean Perinchief had put the side in a winning position.Johnny Bean, Dion Stovell and Jelani Scott scored in the loss for Trojans. In the less then ideal conditions, it was Mallory who opened the scoring for the hosts in the 13 from a corner that saw him left unmarked for the simplest of finishes. Bean levelled 17 minutes later after he pounced on a loose ball in the area to beat Rangers goalkeeper Jason Smith. The tie would last until just before half time when Perichief capped off a fine counterattack from Rangers that saw the midfielder plant his effort past Shaquille Bean in the Trojans goal. With both sides making the best of the weather, a mistake in the Rangers defence gave the visitors their equaliser with an hour gone, with Jahi Simmons crossing the ball from the left and finding an onrushin Scott who beat teammate Bean to the ball.Burch put his side back in front ten minutes later when he ghosted into the Trojans area and nodded home a free kick, thanks in large part to the defenders not picking up his late run at the back post. Not to be outdone by others on the pitch, Stovell scored a peach of a goal when his right footed thunderbolt hit the back of the net, leaving Smith no chance, drawing his side level once more.It wouldn’t be the telling blow, however, as Russell made his presences felt in the dying stages of the game.Russell jumped off the bench with 20 minutes remaining in the game, and won the match with his header from a long ball that beat Bean in goal and settled into the far corner.“It was a hard fought match from both sides, the conditions weren’t that great but we managed to get the better of it and got the win,” said Rangers defender Kemon Simmons.“Their confidence is high coming off of their wins recently so we expected to have a fight on our hands, but playing at home you always have a sense of urgency to get the result so we are pleased.“Three points is a must when you are at home. We knew we had to win the game, no matter how many goals you let in, if you scored more then you concede than you are the winner.”Somerset Trojans: S Bean, J Tucker, D Minors(A Trott,70), Z Iris, J Rogers, J Simmons, J Scott, V Blanchette (T Harvey,60), J Bean, D Stovell, M Jones (T Wade,43).
