Estwanik eases to another 10K title
Chris Estwanik was uncatchable as he retained his RMS Construction 10K Road Race –title yesterday, albeit almost a minute slower than a year ago. With no close challenger to push him, he crossed the line in –31 minutes and 43 seconds. It was a closer race in the women’s event, with Deon Breary making a bold move at two miles to go ahead of early leader Victoria Fiddick and earn victory by just over one minute, in 41.27.In the longer 20K race, Stephen Allen beat his lifetime best by three minutes to win and confirm that he is in great shape for this year’s May 24 Half Marathon Derby. Women’s winner Karen Smith did likewise with a seven-minute winning margin. On the two-lap route, Allen pushed himself to a fast opening six miles, running in close proximity to 10K runner-up Sean Trott (34.23) before settling in for a slightly more conservative pace on his second lap and –finishing with a time of one hour, 10 minutes and 47 seconds.“I capitalised on the fast first 10K,” said Allen.“I ran with Trott, it was a good pace. Because I ran fast on the first lap I lost two or three minutes on the second lap.“I felt good and it was much faster than my time last year,” he added.Although not predicting how he might do in the upcoming May 24 race, Allen said: “If I run well I should be in the mix.”Evan Naude was next home in 1.14.03, followed by Gideon Kigotho in 1.21.42Triathlon specialist Karen Smith won the women’s 20K title in 1.28.31.For much of the race she was alone on the roads, having to use her own pace judgment on the two-lap route, which many competitors favour as a fitness benchmark for next month’s Half-Marathon Derby, which is just over half-a-mile longer in distance.Smith has had to cut back on her swim training because of an injury. As a result she has lately been concentrating on her running and cycling. She said: “I kept an even pace on both laps. I couldn’t see anyone on the second lap I was completely on my own.“I have no complaints, I was happy with my pace.”Catherine Mello was next women, finishing12th overall, in 1.35.31, followed by Claire De Ste Croix in 1.42.10.Those running the 10K had the cooler conditions as a strong sun broke through clouds just as competitors in the longer race were setting out on their second lap of 6.2 miles.Reigning three-time May 24 champion Estwanik appeared comfortable in the 10K as he ran in splendid isolation at the front of the combined race fields.Sean Trott turned in a useful performance to secure the –runner-up spot, with last year’s 20K winner Tony Banks third in 36.16 ahead of nine-time May 24 winner Kavin Smith (36.57)Deon Breary, winner of the women’s 10K, said: “It felt humid today. I stuck close to Victoria (Fiddick) and when she slowed a bit I took my opportunity. Once I was in front I kept the pace going. It is my best time.”Runner-up Fiddick recently returned from a trip overseas. Her time was 42.30, while third woman was Kathy Fulcher in 45.56.Fastest in each age category:Women 10K: (open) Laura Haynes 49.32; (40-49) Deon Breary 41.27; (50-59) Liz Craig 58.26; (60+) Andrea Bolley 1.13.11.Men 10K: (open) Chris Estwanik 31.43; (40-49) Kavin Smith 36.57; (50-59) Devoe Whaley 43.11; (60+) Michael Whalley 49.44.Women 20K: (open) Catherine Mello 1.35.31; (40-49) Karen Smith 1.28.31; (50-59) Lea Osborne 1.57.05; (60+) Peggy Couper 1.54.58.Men 20K: (open) Stephen Allen 1.10.47; (40-49) Edwin Armstrong 1.24.51; (50-59) Mike Osborn 1.32.18; (60+) Eddie Fisher 1.34.38.Full results: See Scoreboard, Page 14.
