Jones sees red after hitting Colts hat-trick
Devonshire Colts 3
Southampton Rangers 1
Kyle Jones scored a hat-trick for Devonshire Colts in this victory but he was one of three players ejected by referee Elihu Holes in this incident-filled Premier Division contest at Police Field yesterday.
Jones and Keith Jennings of Rangers were sent off for fighting each other after 60 minutes and then Colts lost Sean Perinchief after 80 minutes for a second bookable offence.
The performance by Colts showed that they are indeed capable of solidifying a position in the middle of the table while, despite losing, Rangers still proved that they are also capable of being competitive with the best of the teams in the league.
Rangers must have feared that a nightmare was being unfolded when Jones hit them twice within seven minutes of the start – both goals coming from a sloppy defence.
The first came after five minutes when he slipped through the middle to score from close range, then he followed this up when the same jaded group of defenders allowed him to waltz through once again to slot the ball home. Keith Jennings was at the heart of most of Rangers' raids as they quickly found their touch and opened up holes galore in the Colts defence.
Colts 'keeper Jason Wade pushed away a fierce 18-yarder from Jennings after 10 minutes and Colts defender Joseph Butterfield was in place to sweep the ball off his goal line after a dangerous raid by Rangers two minutes later.
Rangers held a decision edge for a 15 minute period and were unlucky after 36 and 37 minutes when Jermaine Dill hurried two shots from just inside the penalty box wide and high and there was reason for them to agonise when Jahne Bean's goal-bound shot was cleared off the goal line by defender Enrique Wilkin a minute before the half.
When play re-started it was Colts who created the first scoring opportunity but Jones poorly placed his shot right into the chest of goalkeeper Jason Smith after 45 seconds. What followed was a series of heated moments with players disputing decisions by the referee and making senseless fouls.
Things really flared up after 53 minutes when Jones got his third goal which came after play had been stopped and the referee making a decision to bounce the ball to continue play - a decision Rangers thought was unfair to them since they were in position at the time.
As Rangers remained in an argumentative mood Colts quickly took advantage of the lapse of their opponents and Jones was able to slip by stunned defenders to score. Play resumed after numerous of protests but it was mostly ugly and contained infringements galore and nasty tackles.
It was not a surprise when Jennings and Jones got their marching orders with tensions so high, but play continued with Rangers still looking for the goal that has deserted them.
Jermaine Dill put a shot at goalkeeper Wade after 73 minutes while Carlos Trott replied for Colts by hitting an effort over from 16 yards.
But the deserved goal by Rangers finally came after 80 minutes when Dill scored from a cross.
Three minutes later Rangers' fans thought a second goal would fall their way but Kamen Tucker had his penalty shot stopped by goalkeeper Wade after Tucker himself was fouled by a defender.
A victory clearly was not on the cards for Rangers but their performance was quite inspiring at times.

Boulevard 2
Somerset Eagles 2
Ajani Gibbons and Dion Stovell cancelled out a Darrin Dowling double as Boulevard and Somerset Eagles had to share the spoils at White Hill Field. Eagles were up 2-0 in the first half after Dowling struck twice in a 20-minute span.
However, their joy was short-lived as Gibbons and Stovell struck to level matters and end Blazers' recent slide.
PHC 3
Somerset Trojans 1
PHC continued to keep pressure on the leaders after a comfortable win over Somerset Trojans at Somerset Cricket Club. With all the goals coming in the second half, it was PHC who grabbed the opener when Omar Shakir put them up just after the break.
It was then Cecoy Robinson who put the final nails in the Trojans coffin, grabbing a brace.
Dwight Basden scored Trojans' only goal.
