St. George's, Rangers open with sull draw at Wellington Oval

St. George's 0, Southampton 0 Yesterday's game at the Wellington Oval between Southampton Rangers and St.

George's provided few opportunities to score as both teams gave a lacklustre performance and played to a tame and uninspired draw.

Although new kids on the block, Southampton Rangers had the better run of the ball in the first 26 minutes of play, they failed miserably in their efforts to finish off plays with errant passes and weak shots on goal being the norm for the day.

St. George's, likewise, had enormous difficulty stringing together successive passes with their front line of Kuma Smith, Marlon Outerbridge and Carlos Greaves being equally ineffective.

Frustration seemed to be setting in as the Rangers' Yousef Bean and St.

George's Marlon Outerbridge were called over by referee Peter Sousa for jostling with one another.

This act seemed to serve as a temporary wake-up call for St. George's as Donald Whitfield put two opportunities wide in the 38th and 39th minutes respectively.

Rangers, still controlling the majority of play across the middle, began losing some of their composure as a result of their inability to finish off runs at the St. George's goal and, moments later, Rangers' Shawn Simons was shown the yellow card for taking Jan Ceiters down from behind.

In the 43rd minute of play, Rangers' Ascento Russell raced into the penalty area after receiving a fine pass from Simons. However, Russell shot weakly at the St. George's keeper, Troy Hall, who smothered the ball from about eight yards out.

Opening the second half of play, Rangers picked up where they left off. They managed to get over crosses from the flanks only to see those efforts go begging for someone to finish them off.

Over the next 15 minutes, both teams pressed forward their attacks as they sought, in vain, to take control and establish dominance.

St. George's, on perhaps the best scoring opportunity for either side on the afternoon, failed to convert from a corner kick. Kuma Smith curled in the kick, which Bermuda international Neil Paynter rose majestically to head against the crossbar.

Carlos Greaves' strike from the rebound also came off the post. The ball bounced out and saw both Paynter and Outerbridge miskick from near the penalty spot as the Rangers defence cleared from danger.

Just minutes later, in the 64th minute of play, Rangers' Brenton Harris waltzed his way through the St. George's defence after a nifty one-two touch between himself and Shawn Simons.

Harris was unlucky not to score as 'keeper Hall rushed off his line to make a diving save at Harris' foot before he could get the shot off.

In the 75th minute, Harris was booked for a high, hard tackle from the rear on St. George's Ceiters. Three minutes later, St. George's Sinclair Gibbons was given his walking papers for taking the feet from under Ascento Russell.

In the final analysis, both teams should consider themselves fortunate to have escaped with a share of the points.
