BIFF fundraiser to screen Oscar-winning shorts

The Bermuda International Film Festival will showcase two Oscar-winning films at the Champagne and Shorts fundraiser.

The event will take place at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute on November 12 at 7 p.m. Tickets, $120, can be reserved by calling 293-3456 or by emailing Sharron Hawker, at sharronhnorthrock.bm.

This year?s short film Academy Award winners, the animated film ?Ryan? and the live action film ?Wasp?, will be screened along with a series of other shorts that received nominations.

Screenings will be preceded by a champagne reception. Coffee and tea will be served after the screenings.

?We are celebrating our status as a qualifying festival for the Short Film Oscar,? said Mrs. Hawker, a member of the festival?s management committee.

?Ryan?, by Canadian director Chris Landreth, is based on the life of Canadian animator Ryan Larkin. Thirty years ago, at the National Film Board of Canada, Larkin produced some of the most influential animated films of our time. Today, he lives on welfare and panhandles for spare change in downtown Montreal.

?Wasp?, by director Andrea Arnold of the United Kingdom, is about a day in the life of an immature mother and her four children, who are barely surviving on a swarming council estate. The film is a powerful evocation of the challenges, and temptations, faced by single mothers living in difficult circumstances.
