The Jackson 5's classic ode to Christmas

Happy holidays Bermuda! By now we are all entrenched into the Christmas season.Earlier this week I heard a song which reminded me of some good advice for Christmas. The song is called Give Love On Christmas Day, and the words are appropriate. This tune was a Christmas classic soul single by a Motown family quintet The Jackson 5. It was released to R&B radio in 1970 and was written by the legedary label's songwriting-producing team, The Corporation. The song is an ode to the world encouraging everyone to "give love on Christmas" because "no greater gift is better than love." The hit became an oft-covered song in decades to come, re-recorded by The Temptations and by the young band that follow Jackson 5's footsteps, New Edition, for their 1985 Christmas album.

Happy holidays Bermuda! By now we are all entrenched into the Christmas season.

Earlier this week I heard a song which reminded me of some good advice for Christmas.

It was given another overhaul by one of Motown's other players, R&B singer Johnny Gill, in 1990 for an all-star Motown Christmas album. In 1994, R&B group, BlackGirl, also covered it and in 2001 R&B singer Faith Evans covered the song during a live Christmas telecast.

More on this hit and its message after The Top 20.

Sky rocketing to number one is Miss Independent by Ne-Yo, a love song atop a creatively produced but slowed down hip-hop beat.

Dropping to number two is Whatever You Like by T.I.

Holding at number three is Mrs. Officer by my namesake Lil Wayne featuring Bobby Valentino and Kidd Kidd, one of the hottest songs around and a former essential new tune.

Improving to number four is Jennifer Hudson's monster new hip-hop track, Pocket Book, a duet with Ludacris, which is just a banging track.

In at number five is the hip and cool new track by John Legend and Andre 3000, entitled Green Light.

Climbing to number six is Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) by Beyonce. This has to be the hottest song and video of the moment. It currently sits atop several industry pop, hip-hop and urban charts. The song has a hot beat, cool lyrics and any video with Beyonce in it is going to be good. This one is no exception to that rule.

Shifting gears to dance music, falling to number seven is current dance anthem Disturbia by hot girl Rihanna. She is now a bona fide superstar who puts on a good show at her concerts.

Up to number eight is Live Your Life by T.I. featuring hot girl and Bajan bombshell Rihanna.

Jumping to number nine is Dangerous by Kardinal Official, from Canada, featuring Akon.

Cracking the top ten, is the new one from Jazmine Sullivan entitled Bust Your Windows. This tune shows the frustration of a person in a failed relationship.

Slipping to number 11 is She's Royal by Taurus Riley.

Up two spots to number 12 is Don't Call Me Baby by Kreesha Turner, which is dancing up the dance music charts.

Spotlight, by former American Idol songstress Jennifer Hudson tumbles to number 13.

Climbing to number 14 is Right Here by Brandy. It's good to have Brandy back in the business; she went missing-in-action for a wihle. Her new hit is currently number one in a few dance and club play charts.

Moving on up to number 15 is the new hit from Ne-Yo, entitled Closer.

Improving to number 16 is a former essential new hit, Get Up by Gospel sister duo Mary Mary.

Last week's essential new hit, I Hate This Part, by the sexiest group of ladies around, the Pussycat Dolls, advances to number 17.

Slipping to number 18 is The Business by Yung Berg featuring Casha, a current hip-hop fave.

Down to number 19 is Can't Believe It by T-Pain and Lil Wayne.

Tumbling to number 20 is Jazmine Sullivan's other hit entitled Need You Bad.

Now back to this week's words: Giving love on Christmas. The song Give Love On Christmas Day has been around for many years. The first time I heard it was when I was a boy of about seven or eight years old and the Jackson Five produced their first Christmas album, which I remember being gold coloured with pictures of the handsome young Michael Jackson and his brothers scattered on the cover.

My mom said she searched all over New York to find this record for me because I just had to have it that Christmas and it was so popular that it was nearly all sold out. That was way back in the early 1970's, when Michael Jackson was a fairly normal little boy or so we thought.

The words are as follows:

People making lists, buying special gifts, it's time to be kind to one and all

It's that time of year, when good friends are dear

And you wish you could give more than just a present from a store

Why don't you give love on Christmas day

Even the man who has everything, would be so happy if you could bring

Him love on Christmas day, no greater gift is there than love

People you don't know, smile and nod hello

Everywhere, there's an air of Christmas joy

It's that once a year, when the world's sincere

And, you like to find a way to show the things that words can't say

Why don't you give love on Christmas day

Oh, the man on the street and the couple upstairs

All need to know that there's one who cares

Give love on Christmas day

No greater gift is there than love

What the world needs is love

Yes the world needs your love; why don't you.....

Give love on Christmas day

Every little child on Santa's knee, has room for your love underneath his tree

Give love on Christmas day

No greater gift is there than love

What the world need is love

Yes the world needs your love; why don't you...

Give love on Christmas day

Jazz, Margaret, and Khiry too, need love everyday as much as you

Give love on Christmas day

No greater gift is there than love

The moral of the story is that the best gift that you can give anybody at Christmas, or indeed at any time of year, is LOVE. It is true, though, that love will mean different things to different people and at different stages in their lives. It doesn't take much to figure out, however, how to give love to your brother, neighbour or friend.

We know what to do, we just need to give it.

Peace on earth and goodwill towards mankind.
