New calendar honours our elders
THE Silver Revolution is continuing its efforts to highlight Bermuda's senior citizens, their contributions and their various needs.
Encouraged by the success of their recent seniors conference, the group has produced a calendar honouring the island's older residents ? The calendar features 12 of the island's seniors photographed in black and white; one picture used to highlight each month of 2005.
"This is an effort that we undertook to help, in a very small way, the seniors community," explained committee member and Shadow Youth and Sport Minister Jon Brunson.
"The issues and the plight faced by many of our seniors is huge ? I'm sure you've heard all the debates of late ? and what we are trying to do is figure out how we can make a contribution to that. That was the impetus behind this whole initiative."
Proceeds from the calendar will be divided between Project Action ? Bermuda's only charitable minibus service for seniors ? and the Sunset Garden Rest Home in Southampton.
"We talked about it and thought, what better way to capture the island's seniors? Wouldn't it be great to tag a face to the initiative? What better way to show how vibrant our seniors are? It shows the contribution they've made and are still making to Bermuda. It captures their image and emotion, and engenders a response to who they are."
Working with Mr. Brunson on the calendar were Shadow Women's Affairs Minister Suzann Roberts Holshouser and co-organiser of the recent seniors conference, Keetha Lowe.
Each confessed to the final product being a team effort.
"We look forward as a committee, to creating new ideas from the old," Mrs. Holshouser explained of their task. "We want to be of benefit to them because they have benefited us. If it wasn't for our seniors, we wouldn't be here today. It's so very important for us to give back and that's what we're trying to do with this calendar.
"There were so many of our seniors that have done so much for the community that it was very difficult to do. We decided this would be the first of many; we realised we didn't have to panic because we hadn't been able to capture all of them."
Added Mr. Brunson: "You'll see some very-well known people, some not-so-well-known people. It's interesting if you meet them and hear their stories, their contributions become evident. That's why we entitled it . Each and every one of these people store a wealth of information about Bermuda. They're our real treasures."
Ms Lowe said she was still discovering the degree of impact the seniors conference had had on the community.
"The conference encouraged many factions of the community to jump onboard, to get involved and to try and make a difference," she said. "The last time we spoke, you asked where we intended to go from here.
"Our intent is to be in many places. This calendar speaks to that. The event had that much of an impact. I had the pleasure, about two days ago, of meeting with one of my clients. She raised the fact that the Silver Revolution seemed to be really taking off.
"I didn't realise at that time that I was speaking with the soon-to-be president of the Bermuda Junior Service League. They have subsequently decided to make seniors their mandate. So again, how effective have we been? We've been as effective as the lives that we've touched."
lwill be available at stores across the island some time next week. The cost is $15.
