Smith, Sherratt clash in final

Divisional Handicap Squash Tournament after both won their Thursday night semi-finals in contrasting style.

National champion Sherratt brushed aside Norman Furtado 3-1 while Smith had to battle through five games to beat his namesake Stephen Smith.

The week-long tournament, which started last Saturday, is split into four divisions with each player in the 80-strong field carrying a handicap.

Furtado took a 10-point lead under the handicap system into his match against Sherratt and used it to full advantage to win the opening game 15-7.

But from then on it was all Sherratt as he wore down his opponent to take the next three games 15-11, 15-8, 15-8.

Meanwhile, the battle of the Smiths was always going to be a tight affair with both having earlier defeated seeded players. National junior team member Stephen jumped over his older opponent in the opening games to take a 15-9, 15-11 lead.

But the tenacious Kirby launched a gritty fightback to win the next three and the match, 15-12, 15-12, 15-12.

Director of squash at the Devonshire courts, Ross Triffitt, was full of praise for the loser.

"Stephen is obviously showing the benefits of representing Bermuda in the World Junior Championships in July and the Junior Caribbean Championships in August,'' said Triffitt.

"It's wonderful to see a player progress through the school, junior and elite junior programmes to be pushing for selection on the men's national team and it's a credit to the programmes implemented by the BSRA and their coaching staff.'' In today's Division Two final, Jeff Roach clashes with Tom Quinn after they defeated Justin Robinson and Michael Swain respectively in the semis.

Roach faced a difficult match against junior squad member Robinson who led two games to one before losing the last two.

Quinn won his match 3-1 over the division's top seed, taking the fourth game 15-11.

One of the consolation semi-finals in Division Two produced the match of the night as Naz Jetha came from 2-1 down to win 15-14 in the fifth. Jetha now meets Jill Curran who enjoyed a straight games victory over junior Richard Arnold.

In the Division Three final, Mark Zuill meets Jim Tees while the consolation has already been decided with Debra Ross edging Brian McCulloch 3-2.

Today's junior final sees top seed Andrew Stout taking on unexpected finalist Mark James while in the consolation final, Timmy Sirinivasan meets Laura Robinson.

Today's finals begin at 6.00 p.m.
