High winds force flight cancellations
Bad weather in the local area yesterday forced a number of flight cancellations from Canada and the US eastern seaboard, due to heavy crosswinds at the LF Wade Internationa Airport. The Bermuda Weather Service said last night: “A Severe Weather Watch is valid for early this evening as a strong cold front arrives, bringing another round of showery rain and isolated thunderstorms with storm force wind gusts.”Flights have returned to the regular schedule by today, but not before leaving countless Bermudians and residents stranded in.Acting Director at the LF Wade International Airport, Mike Osborn, confirmed that the Air Canada flight from Toronto, US Air’s flight from Philadelphia and flights due in from the JFK International Airport in New York run by Jet Blue were all cancelled due to high winds, which at some points were gusting up to 55 knots at the East End. Mr. Osborn said Air Canada will operate an extra flight today to accommodate those who were left stranded in Canada yesterday, in addition to their regular service to the island. Continental, which cancelled its Newark flight yesterday, will also be running an extra flight out of Newark this morning.Neither Delta’s flight out of Atlanta nor the British Airways flight out of London last night were affected. Passengers due to leave on flights scheduled to leave Bermuda today are urged to contact their respective airlines directly for more information.Today’s weather forecast is for winds to drop to around 26mph while temperatures will be in the low 60s and high 50s. There is a chance of rain.* Are you affected? E-mail news[AT]royalgazette.bm
