Fish sculpture keeps Cathedral fund afloat

The Aquarium's grouper parade float will be brought back to life with a donation for the Cathedral Fund.

Belco donated $3,000 to Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ) for the purchase of 60 square feet of old copper from the Anglican Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity roof. The copper will be used to cover the original 16 foot grouper float that was made for the 2001 Bermuda Day Parade.

Work on the grouper sculpture will begin this summer and, when completed, it will become a permanent public sculpture said Jason Semos, graphic artist at (BAMZ).

He added: "To us, the grouper float has become a symbol of Bermuda's biodiversity and of the team spirit at BAMZ. We are very grateful to the Cathedral and Belco for making this possible."

The original float was made of papier-mache, chicken wire and local flora, but it was removed when it became weather beaten.

"We jumped at the chance to contribute to the Cathedral Fund, while helping the Aquarium produce a sculpture that will inspire people to think about the beauty and value of our environment," said Garry Madeiros, Belco president and chief executive officer.

Anglican Bishop Rev. Ewan Ratteray said: "We are grateful for Belco's generous contribution to the Cathedral Fund and pleased to know that our copper roofing will help keep the grouper alive and in the public eye at BAMZ.
