School art auction raises $1,500 to fund scholarship
An auction of artwork by pupils at a private school has raised $1,500 for bursary to help fund an art scholarship.
Rachel Swinburne, a visual arts teacher at Bermuda High School, said it was hoped the fundraiser would become an annual event.
She added: “This is the first specific arts bursary by BHS – it’s nice to have something specifically for arts post high school level for those pursuing creative industries.”
Ms Swinburne said: “It was about students supporting each other and, despite all the extra hurdles due to Covid-19, we got the $1,500 which felt like a positive start.”
She added: “It was exciting for the students to see their art displayed in a prestigious show and there was a diverse mix of artists. We would like to do this as an annual event.”
The auction, held on Monday, showcased the work of Year 9 students up to International Baccalaureate 2 level.
Pupils donated digital work, photographs and prints.
There was limited capacity at the auction, held in the school’s new Innovation Centre arts room, but all 50 works of art on show were sold.
The recipient of the award will be decided by staff nomination later in the school year.
Lila McHugh, who is on the IB2 art course, won the People’s Choice Award – a $200 voucher to have her work printed by Hamilton-based Colourlab.
