Swimmers in hunt for medal glory

Five Bermuda swimmers were due to challenge for medals in finals races last night at the Carifta Championships in Barbados.Vanessa Esposito was set for action in the 200 metre individual medley, Mitch Gariepy has qualified for the 50m breaststroke, Jesse Washington met the mark in the 100 freestyle, Ashley Yearwood reached the 100m free final and Nick Patterson will take to the water in the 200m butterfly.Patterson shattered his own 15-16 age group record from two minutes and 24 seconds to 2:17.73 during the heats.National swim coach Ben Smith said yesterday: “We hope to continue with the personal bests and to try to convert these finals into medals.”Yearwood came agonisingly close to winning a medal for Bermuda in the 50 metre butterfly, finishing two hundredths of a second off a podium place on Sunday.The 16-year-old proved she had made a full recovery from a long-term shoulder injury by shaving more than a second off the age group record, finishing fourth in her race, clocking in at 29.72 seconds.Also on Sunday, Yearwood came 18th in the girls 15-17 200m freestyle in a time of 2:19.88. Emma Franklin finished 20th in 2:28.20 in the same race.In the girls 100m backstroke, Shannon Hassell came sixth in her prelims in a time a 1:17.74, to qualify her for the final. Jesse Washington continued to show his promise with a sixth place finish in the boys 11-12 50m butterfly in a time of 31.55 lowering the age group record by a second.Both Bermuda’s 400m medley relay teams were in action on Sunday night, with the boys team of Charlie Pilgrim, Mitch Gariepy, Jesse Washington and Shannon Botelho finishing fourth (5:04.56). The girls team made up of Somer Froud, Shannon Hassell, Erica Hawley and Vanessa Esposito came eighth in 5.37.39.
