Theatre Boycott anniversary
The Corporation of Hamilton and Beyond Barriers have joined together for the 44th anniversary of the Theatre Boycott.
The anniversary celebrations will take place tomorrow on the steps of City Hall at 2 p.m.
Glenn Fubler, co-ordinator of Beyond Barriers (BB), said the move came about as a result of a collaboration between the Corporation of Hamilton and BB.
The Corporation of Hamilton is using the anniversary as a first step in a programme that will cover several historical sites around the city.
The 44th anniversary of the Theatre Boycott aims to foster an appreciation for the Island's cultural diversity and will showcase the significance of the boycott, which occurred in 1959.
"A plaque has been commissioned, but is not ready so a replica will be available for members of the public, supporters and the Progressive Group," said Mr. Fubler.
Corporation of Hamilton secretary Roger Sherratt said: "We were thinking of ways to enhance the city in various locations by producing a series of plaques of historic importance.
"This would be a very appropriate first bronze plaque and the Crest of the City of Hamilton will be on it. Plaques will be in different sites around Hamilton and this one will be installed as soon as we have it."
The Mayor of Hamilton Lawson Mapp, and the chairman of Beyond Barriers Canon Thomas Nesbitt will host the gathering. There will also be a Pause to Ponder, which will begin at 2 p.m. The Chamber of Commerce yesterday said its members would be observing the Pause to Ponder.
"This pause will allow our community to reflect - at the same time - with appreciation on the actions of the many who brought about that watershed event and to think on ways, that together, we can build a greater sense of community," said a Chamber spokesman.
