Island to celebrate Human Rights Declaration

Bermuda is to celebrate the 56th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights this month with a host of commemorative events.

Between Monday, December 6 and 9, Mr. Matu Baruka, an international human rights activist, will be addressing students from Harrington Sound School, Northlands Primary School and Bermuda High School for Girls.

A Human Rights Proclamation Ceremony will take place on the steps of City Hall on December 10 at 12.45 p.m.

The ceremony will feature students reading poetry, music by Dean Fraser and Carol McLaughlin, a further speech from Mr. Baruka and the reading of the Human Rights Proclamation by Premier Alex Scott.

A new feature added to the celebrations this year is the Family Fun Concert, which is scheduled for December 10 between 8 p.m and 2 a.m.

The concert will feature local artists such as the Filipino, Caribbean and Portuguese Dancers, DJ Radigun, FLUK, Ali Malik, Ninja Cutty and Ras Giorgis.

Additionally, middle and high school children have been invited to submit essays on six separate human rights issues: sex, racism, pregnancy, origin, sexual harassment and disability.

The top five essays will be read at Number One Shed on December 11.
