Dill on spot for Bermuda

"We won, it wasn't pretty but we got the result.'' That summation of last night's Junior World Cup preliminary round between Bermuda and St. Vincent by Bermuda's Director of Coaching Clyde Best was an accurate account of this first leg clash at Somerset CC.

Bermuda now enter tomorrow night's second leg with a one-goal advantage, thanks to a first-half penalty by Marlon Dill before a disappointing crowd of about 350 fans.

The goal came after 26 minutes after Jared Peniston was fouled by centre-back Brent Samuel as the Bermuda player dribbled through the defence.

That knocked the spirit out of the visitors who were competitive until that moment and quick on the counter attack.

Until the goal there was little to choose between the two with Khem Ollivierre prominent up front for St. Vincent and unlucky not to score after 13 minutes when Zane Hendrickson in the Bermuda goal had to advance to block his drive from 13 yards.

Seven minutes later Bermuda had a good scoring opportunity, as Earl Furbert missed from close range, putting a cross by skipper Nasir Wade over the bar.

After 23 minutes Bermuda were unfortunate when the hard-working Tariq Jennings brilliantly dribbled past three defenders and watched in agony as his blast from 14 yards hit the post and was cleared.

Thanks to Dill's penalty Bermuda began the second half with a lead but heavy rain prevented either side from taking the initiative.

When the rain subsided, Jennings blew a chance for Bermuda, his tentativeness in front of goal after 63 minutes allowing the alert Clint Providence in the St. Vincent goal to advance quickly to rob him of possession.

Bermuda slowly took a decisive edge and were more imaginative up front when Mackie Crane and Brendon Minors came on as substitutes after 68 and 72 minutes respectively.

A sizzling 15-yard blast by Minors after 76 minutes saw Providence deny him a goal by sensationally diving to push the shot wide of the post and Jennings struck the rebound wide.

St. Vincent finished strongly with Hendrickson leaping to prevent substitute Joel George's powerful shot levelling the scores five minutes from the end.
