Annual Career Fair next week

The third annual Career Fair taking place next week will be full of great speakers, entertainment and information for high school and middle school students interested in higher education, according to organisers.

Careers 07 will take place at the Bermuda College on Thursday and Friday. Wednesday night will feature three local and international motivational speakers for the pre-event.

Some of the activities on the schedule include exhibitor booths, extreme art, a business fashion show and a raffle draw.

Yesterday, College President Duranda Greene welcomed Minister of Education, Randy Horton, Ralph Richardson of the ACE Foundation, Alan Thompson, CEO of Butterfield Bank and Jonathan Brewin, CEO of HWP, all sponsors of the fair.

Mr. Horton said: "With the Bermuda College as the facilitator, this fair symbolises a relationship between the Ministry, its private and public partners and many employees throughout Bermuda who together move to assist all of our students in making wise future career decisions."

He continued: "Students, as you participate in this upcoming fair you must do your part. Gather as much information about these institutions as possible and ask as many pertinent questions as you so desire. Please take the materials with you and re-read the information about the many varied careers."

Mr. Thompson said: "Events like Careers 07 are invaluable in helping the younger generation remember how important it is to start planning their careers early, in order to further increase their chances of future success."

"Never has it been more important for potential employees to start networking early, to really focus on a career path that is right for them and to increase their employability by strengthening their academic prowess."

Mr. Brewin said the goal of HWP is to "generate more interest among students in automotive mechanics as a potential career option".

He explained their booth will have interactive demonstrations for students to participate in and laptops to test their knowledge of automotive mechanics.

Mr. Richardson said this is a big innovation bringing technology and business together for the fair and said each year has been unique with the motivational speakers. He said the speakers for the pre-event this year are local and international football star Shaun Goater, Canadian Olympic rower Silken Laumann, and Jean Francois Detaille, Belgian action painter.

Tickets for pre-event are free and can be picked up at ACE.

The two-day fair is for career minded students with big dreams. It begins Thursday at 10 a.m. and finishes Friday at 3 p.m.
