Goalkeeper Hall signs for Toronto
Goalkeeper Freddy Hall has joined Bermuda teammate Reggie Lambe at Toronto FC after signing a four-year contract with the Major League Soccer (MLS) side.Hall, a free agent since being released by Northampton Town, agreed terms with the Canadian outfit on Tuesday and could go straight into their squad for tomorrow’s game against Houston Dynamo. The 27-year-old has trained with Toronto over the last few weeks and was handed a starting berth in their recent home friendly against Premier League giants Liverpool.Toronto coach Paul Mariner is familiar with Hall from when he spent pre-season at Plymouth Argyle two years ago and has been keen to add another keeper to his squad following an injury to Stefan Frei.Mariner, a former Argyle assistant, is a close friend of Bermuda Hogges owner Paul Scope who helped facilitate Lambe’s move to Toronto and also alerted the club to Hall’s availability.Scope said Mariner and Toronto’s keeper coach Stewart Kerr, formerly of Scottish powerhouse Celtic, had been impressed with Hall’s form between the sticks in practice.“Paul (Mariner) knows all about Freddy and first saw him play for the Hogges two years ago before inviting him to train with Plymouth who would have signed him had it not been for their financial issues,” he said.“Freddy’s agreed a four-year deal with the club but has the chance to win an improved contract if he shows his worth between now and the end of the season.“I’m told that Stewart Kerr, Toronto’s keeper coach, also likes Freddy a lot and this a great opportunity for him.”Scopes has backed Hall to follow Lambe’s lead by becoming a first team regular at the BMO Stadium.“I watched Toronto’s game against Liverpool and was proud to see two Bermudians in the starting line-up,” said Scope, who plans to meet with Toronto FC officials to discuss a Bermuda tourism initiative.“I thought Freddy did very well and certainly didn’t look out of place. Paul told me he was very happy with Freddy’s performance and had already offered him a contract prior to the game.“Reggie has really established himself in Toronto’s first team and the feedback I’ve received from Toronto is that they feel Freddy can do the same.”Hall endured a frustrating spell at Northampton, which he joined last summer on a one-year contract, making just three appearances for the club. But Scope believes the ex-St George’s shot stopper didn’t get a “chance to shine” during his time at the English League Two side which struggled throughout last season.“It was a shame things didn’t work out for Freddy at Northampton,” Scope said. “He didn’t really get a chance to shine and it’s always difficult for a young keeper, especially in the lower divisions.”Under Mariner, who succeeded former coach Aron Winter last month, Toronto have enjoyed a mid-season revival having won their last three games.Last summer Toronto forged links with Hogges as part of a football development agreement with the intention of tapping into the Island’s talent pool.
