Operating on the cutting edge
keep the check-out line running smoothly at Lindo's Family Foods. The first of its kind on the Island, the Personal Computer-based programme serves as a cash register but is capable of doing so much more. "The system runs on top of Windows NT,'' explained manager Zachary Moniz. "We have a huge database of over 17,000 items and most of our items have a Universal Product Code on them.'' Scanners linked to each of the store's seven cash registers activate the Universal Product Code, or UPC, which then gives a description of the product and the price assigned to it. "Everything is itemised for the costumer so that when they go home, they can look at their receipt and check off everything they have bought,'' he added. "The name of the item and the price will be on it. It's a very reliable system. It's land-based and on a local network. And even if one server goes down, we are able to run each system independently. The beauty of the system is that don't have to run it using the network and, being windows based, it has a lot of advantages. Word is at your disposal and can use it as a PC. So if can't get to another computer, can use the cash register.''
