WOW launches on-demand movie service
On the heels of launching high definition channels, World on Wireless is now offering a new on-demand service to watch new release movies and other programmes on TV via the internet.WOW president and CEO Stanley Wright said yesterday the new on-demand service is a local alternative to Apple TV and Netflix. It works through the set-top box with on-screen instructions and search tools so you just connect it to your TV and you’re ready to go.“The subscriber, using their existing internet connection and ISP, connects to a server where they can download studio movies starting at $3.99.“There is a monthly subscription $9.95 there is access to KidsUnlimited children and Karaoke, plus YouTube. New movies are added weekly.”He said WOW gave the service a soft launch in July.It works via a WOW set-top box connected to the internet and your TV. The set-top box is programmed to access the server and using a remote for the set-top box the subscriber can view the menu of programmes, select, and watch what they wish.“Unlike internet-based services WOW’s On-Demand is delivered through your TV aerial and therefore does not count against your monthly Internet data cap,” a WOW spokeswoman said.“We’re always looking to give our customers more value,” Mr Wright said. “‘The On-Demand package enriches our already great products and we’re excited to introduce it to Bermuda. There is something for everyone and the list of shows and movies keeps growing every week.”WOW is offering apromotional incentive with the first 100 subscribers to on-demand receiving six months free subscription, a $59.70 value, and if you’re one of the first 25 subscribers WOW is offering a complimentary set-top-box valued at $195.Mr Wright said WOW is also planning to introduce a SVOD (subscription video-on-demand) service soon.This will allow the subscriber for a fixed fee to gain access to suite of movies and programming. In addition, a wireless keyboard can be connected to the set-top box for limited internet browsing.WOW recently introduced high definition service with the initial offer of five sports channels.The provider anticipates in October adding 10 additional HD channels which will include seven sports and eight family programmes (channels being finalised and will be announced soon), but will include news, educational, movies, and others.WOW does not charge additional for the five sports channels and does not plan on charging for the additional HD channels, Mr Wright said.The customer must upgrade to an HD PVR (personal video recorder), which can be rented for $25 or purchase for $550.Competitor Bermuda CableVision has applied to the Telecoms Commission to introduce a video-on-demand channel with movies starting at $2.99 and many cable TV shows free with subscription.
