2006 action kicks off

THE BIHL youth hockey was back in action on January 21st at the new refurbished in-line hockey rink located at Admiralty Park. The intermediate league opened with the Leafs defeating the Canadians 1-0 in a hard-fought game that featured fast-paced skating and great goaltending by Jaylen Martin for the Leafs and Alex Griffin for the Canadians.

The first period was scoreless with the Canadians carrying the play led by Tyler MacNeil and Riley Voth. The momentum changed in the final period with Mikey Daly, Matthew Betteto, Nick Hall line pressing the Canadians for much of the period. The game was finally settled by a late goal by Michael Betteto who banked in his own rebound after a great individual effort.

The second intermediate game had the rapidly improving Senators hosting the high flying Oilers. The game featured some of the best team-play passing and skating seen all year. Adam Weech led the Oilers to an early 3-0 lead with two unassisted goals with winger Toby Brooks chipping in the third Oiler goal after a nice pass from brother Sam.

The Senators got untracked with three straight goals at the end of the first period let by Tye O'Shaughnessy with two goals and Cameron Neal finishing off a breakaway to tie the game. The second period opened with wide-open end-to-end offensive action with several great saves made by Oilers Beckett Simmons and Senators Grenville Lines.

Tyson Harvey put the Senators up by one with a nice wrist shot into the top corner. The Oilers pressed with furious action in the final few minutes with new comers Bradley Robinson and Daniel Perez scoring their first goals of the season with highlight reel shots into the back of the Senators net to keep the Oilers winning streak alive.

January 28th BIHL Action had the Senators continuing their recent fine play with a 3-2 victory over the Canadians to record their first win of the season over the rival Canadians. The Canadians opened the scoring with Ryan Goddard netting a hard wrist shot from the blueline. Tyler MacNeil added to the lead with a hard-fought backhand goal in traffic after receiving a nice pass from Conor Lohan. Will Gardner shut the Canadians down after that point with several key saves to keep the Senators in the game.

The second period began with heavy action at both ends. The Tadhg O'Shaughnessy, Tyson Harvey, Danny Heintzman line evened the score with two quick goals, one by Tyson and one by Tadhg after some strong forechecking by Heintzman. Cameron Neal completed the comeback with a nice individual effort flipping in his own rebound after a long accurate shot on goaltender Riley Voth.

The all-girls Canucks were back in action taking on the Leafs in the second contest. The all-girl verses boys match-up ended up being a closely fought battle with the game outcome in balance to the end. Mikey Daly and Tommy Ruck split the Leaf goaltending duties and kept the Leafs in the game after the Canucks led by Adrianne Miller and Julia Scully applied intense early pressure. Taylor Ruck helped his brother out by opening the scoring with a hard snap shot into the far corner.

Josh Lines added to the lead with a nice wrist shot through the five hole. The girls charged back in the final frame with Lauren Daly notching her second goal of the season against brother Mikey pushing in a rebound from close range.

Matthew Betteto restored the Leafs lead blazing down the right wing and depositing a high shot into the top corner of the Leafs net. Paula Weech put the Canucks close finishing off a breakaway with a nice deke. The game ended with a Leafs victory 3-2 with Tommy Ruck displaying great scrambling skills in the closing moments preserving the win.
