Young team ready for learning curve

Tough task: from left — Arrowsmith, Wollmann, Penruddocke, Buckley and Stefaniuk

Bermuda will be represented at the International Optimist Dinghy Association World Championships in San Isidro, Argentina, by a mostly inexperienced team.

Flying the Island’s flag in South America are Joe Arrowsmith, George Buckley, Adriana Penruddocke, Tayte Stefaniuk and Mikey Wollmann, who competed at the same venue when it hosted the 2012 South American Championships.

“There is a strong current adding to the chop and a wide variety of wind conditions which could make it very challenging to sail,” Wollmann said.

“I hope my experience from sailing there before and that I’m bigger now will help me in the tough and possibly windy conditions.”

Martin Jenkins, the Bermuda high-performance coach and two-times IODA world champion, has been putting the sailors through their paces in the lead up to the regatta, which will be held from October 20 to 30.

Bermuda’s opti sailors were selected to represent their country after a series of trials.

“For most of the team this is their first World Championships, we wish them the very best,” Steve Arrowsmith, the newly elected Bermuda Optimist Dinghy Association president, said. “It’s a young team and we hope to see some of them continue to represent Bermuda in the years to come.

“The Bermuda Optimist fleet has a wealth of young talent coming along and the future is very promising.”

There are more than 200 sailors from 51 countries registered for this year’s World Championships, which are being held in Argentina for the first time.

The opening ceremony is on October 20 with racing to start on October 22.

There are 12 races scheduled with October 25 and 26 set aside for the World Team Race Championships before the regatta concludes.
