Islands in the sun for a French celebration

Bermuda's French-speaking community has introduced a new twist to its annual celebration of France's national holiday.

This year, the Alliance Francaise Bastille dinner dance will have a Pacific island theme.

"The French Polynesian theme reminds us that there are French-speaking people in many, many parts of the world," said Nicky Gurret, president of the non-profit organisation formed to promote the French language and culture in Bermuda.

"We also thought it would be fun to explore an Island theme to connect us, here in Bermuda, with ideas from island people on the other side of the world."

The menu will feature Polynesian specialities such as roasted suckling pig, vanilla scented swordfish and coconut chicken. Dance music and entertainment will be provided by the Tom Ray Orchestra.

In France, July 14, Bastille Day, is a national holiday commemorating the storming of the notorious Bastille prison in 1789. This marked the beginning of the French Revolution and the French people's fight for "liberty, equality and fraternity". For citizens of France, the attack on the Bastille symbolizes freedom, democracy and the struggle against all forms of oppression.

For l'Alliance Francaise des Bermudes, Bastille Day is the major event in a regular schedule of films, lectures and concerts that bring together French citizens in Bermuda and others on the Island who enjoy the rich culture, heritage and flavours of France. Established more than 20 years ago, the organisation has 130 members from Europe, North America, Africa and the Caribbean, as well as Bermuda.

Bermuda's Bastille celebration takes place on July 14 at 7 p.m. at Riddell's Bay Golf and Country Club. Tickets are available at All Wrapped Up in the Washington Mall. The cost is $65 for members and $70 for non-members.
