I love cricket, but TV game boring
This week I thought I would share something about me that many people probably don't know. I am a multi-sports lover. Growing up in a sporting family over the years I have grown to love several sports.
My favourite sport to watch on TV is football, but boxing is a close second. Shocked huh! Yes, I have made my name as a cricketer in Bermuda, but if I am not watching England play, I find cricket very boring to watch. Outside of the sports I named already I am also an avid NFL supporter and basketball fan.
Qualities that I look for when selecting a team to support consists of players who stand out in a team or a team's defensive or offensive strategies.
For example, I remember watching Big League Soccer years ago and seeing Manchester United play for the first time. As I sat and watched I saw Bryan Robson control Manchester United's midfield like a general and because he was left footed like me I took a liking to him and Manchester United.
With respect to individual sports, I love a male or female athlete that shows confidence and has the ability to back that confidence up. The one sport I truly love watching is boxing.
My father named me after the great Cassius Clay. While there were many great boxers around while I was growing up, my all time favourite was Sugar Ray Leonard. He was smooth as silk and exceptionally skillful. Since he has retired I enjoy watching Floyd Mayweather. He is in a class of his own. The whole world awaits the fight between him and Manny Pacquiao, but there is no doubt in my mind Mayweather will win the fight. He will then be remembered as the greatest ever.
Watching any sport to me is fun, but the one sport I find truly exciting is basketball. My NBA team is the Boston Celtics. I am a big Larry Bird fan. While many people in Bermuda jumped on the Michael Jordan bandwagon, Larry Bird was by far the best pure shooter ever to play basketball.
As a youngster I used to watch him shoot three pointers after three pointers and since then I have supported the Boston Celtics. Right now I am proud to say that we have the big three who are currently dominating the courts – Kevin Garnet, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. I look forward to seeing the LA Lakers in the finals again.
My NFL team, the San Francisco 49ers, are in a rebuilding phase we have been to the top and now we are clawing our way back after losing such phenomenal players. Joe Montana has to be remembered as the greatest quarterback ever.
Him along with Jerry Rice as one of if not the best wide receiver of his time set an example for other teams to emulate. Watching this team play back then was just incredible. They were in such good unison with each other that teams found it impossible to stop them. Personally, and I may be biased, but I haven't seen an NFL team come close to playing on their level.
While quite a few Bermudians just started watching golf recently because of the Tiger Woods syndrome, I was always an admirer of the sport, and more notably a Nick Faldo fan.
Having been an English fan in cricket it was easy for me to support Nick Faldo as he is an Englishman and for years he dominated the sport. Nick was a fierce competitor and was considered the world's best during the late 80's and early 90's.
Another sport that I loved watching was track and field, especially when it came to the Olympics. There was no athlete around who could compare to the great Carl Lewis. Lewis was a world-beater with exceptional pace. Not only did he dominate the sprints, but he also dominated long jump. Lewis was exceptional and will always be remembered as the most dominant sprinter of his time.
Oops! I almost didn't mention cricket Ha! Ha! Wouldn't that have been ironic? I love playing cricket more than any other sport, but I do not enjoy watching it, more than any other sport. If England are playing I could possibly be glued to the TV, but let it be any other team, my interest is just not there.
Unlike most I didn't watch any of the 20/20 IPL games. Back in the day I used to love watching Graham Gooch bat because he was one of the few players who could handle the West Indies pace. He was unique in that he wore a white helmet unlike others who had colored helmets. Personally, I modelled my game around his unique style as he would hold his bat aloft as the bowler ran in to bowl, thus giving him more time to play.
All sports are fun to watch in one way or another even those that I didn't mention like sailing, NHL, NASCAR, and many more. People watch sports for different reasons. Some people watch sports because of the love of the sport, while others watch it because of the excitement that it brings.
I love the thrill of competition. I love to see how different athletes perform under different conditions and circumstances. Players either rise to the occasion or they falter under pressure. People like Michael Jordan, Joe Montana and Muhammad Ali were great athletes because they were consistently good and exceptionally good under pressure.
Today sportsmen around the world are being used as role models for our youth to follow. So I stress to the sportsmen of Bermuda, be mindful of how you conduct yourself on and off of the field, because there are youngsters watching you.
Don't let the love and passion you have for the game cloud what is right and what is wrong. This can easily happen, take it from me because I have been there.
