2011 Carifta Games get go-ahead

Bermuda Track and Field president Donna Watson breathed a sigh of relief this afternoon after it was confirmed that Jamaica would host the 2011 Junior Carifta Games.Under threat since original host St Kitts' decided to pull out at the last minute, it had been feared that the 40th edition of the competition might have to be abandoned altogether.Jamaica had been suggested as an alternative, although there was some hesitation on the Caribbean Island's part as the proposed dates of the event, April 23-25, run very close to their presitigious International Invitational event that attracts competitors from all over the world. However, North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association president Teddy McCook has confirmed that the Games will now take place at the end of April as planned."The 2011 edition, the 40th Jr. Carifta Games, will take place in Jamaica from April 23-25," said McCook in a statement sent to member nations. "This has been made possible through the cooperation and approval of the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association, despite earlier concerns of the event's proximity to the very popular Jamaica International Invitational event."On behalf of the NACAC board I wish to, first, thank all the Federations within and outside our competition area for their interest in making the effort to host the Games. It is our sincere hope that we will put all the uncertainty behind us and work with our sponsors to ensure that Carifta 2011, the fortieth, will be an outstanding success."Useful websites: www.nacac-iaaf.org, www.btfa.bm
