The devastated cousin of murder victim Jahmiko LeShore has penned a song about how her beloved home Island has been “ripped apart” by gun violence.Simona Eversley, 22, has “expressed her anger through music” with the release of her latest song, ‘Island Not The Same’.The hip-hop artist, who is known as Mona Li$a, is struggling to come to terms with the loss of Mr LeShore who was gunned down last month. He was murdered on Boundary Crescent, Devonshire, on March 1.Just two weeks later his girlfriend Tashae Brown gave birth to their son Kar'da LeShore who is said to look “just like his Dad”. Mr LeShore was so excited about becoming a dad that he chose a name for his son right after the ultrasound.Ms Eversley’s song includes the lines, “this isn’t the place I once lived” as everyone is now “running around with a gun”.It goes on: “My Island gone crazy, they changed it from paradise into the hood…Life is a gift we have to cherish it, no individual sets as we are all from the same nine parishes…All we need is some love now, so put the guns down.”Tonita LeShore, who is Ms Eversley’s mom and Mr LeShore’s aunt, said: “I agree with what my daughter has done 100 percent.“I listen to the song everyday, all day; it has such a strong message. She talks about the relationship she had with her cousin, how she remembers him and how his son Kar'da was born two weeks after his murder and how he has to grow up without a father.“But most of all she explains how the Island has changed. Gun violence has ripped apart the Island and Bermuda has lost sight of its own children.“She writes songs about whatever is on her mind as it’s a way for her to express her feelings.”Ms Eversley, who is a college student about to start a degree in physical therapy, is said to have “always been musical”. She performed in a female trio called First Class, before going solo a couple of years ago.She has released about six singles and names her musical influences as Tupac, Akon, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson. The ‘Island Not The Same’ video can be viewed on You Tube. It shows clips of Ms Eversley and Mr LeShore, as well as photos of Bermuda, crime scenes and other murder victims.Ms Eversley was said to be “incredibly close” to Mr LeShore even though her family moved to Bellwood, Illinois, in 1998 when she was nine. She was said to “BB, text and Facebook” her cousin everyday.Ms LeShore, who has two daughters and three sons, said: “We’re a very close-knit family and my daughter was so close to her cousin, everyone said how alike they were.“They talked non-stop, they even had similar mannerisms, they were more like sister and brother than cousins. They were the jokesters of the family.”Mr LeShore visited Illinois in July last year with his mom Damita and brothers Jahkeo, 30, and Kenji, 16. They enjoyed lots of family time together, including a reunion with his American side of the family.Mr LeShore was even making plans to move to Illinois to live with his aunt and cousins so that he could “get into college and provide a better life for his son”.Shortly before Mr LeShore’s murder his aunt sent him a Facebook message asking when she was going to see him as she was missing him so much.He had excitedly phoned his family in the States to say: “Tashae’s pregnant.”Then immediately after the ultrasound he phoned them to say they were having a son and he’d chosen the name Kar'da.Mr LeShore told everyone he was going to “be responsible and provide for his son and be there for him”.Ms LeShore said she’ll “never forget” the two phone calls she received from her sisters in Bermuda on March 1. One call said the family were on their way to the hospital as Mr LeShore had been shot. Just two hours later, Ms LeShore was told her nephew “hadn’t made it”.Ms LeShore, who read out a poem at her nephew’s funeral, called it “a ruthless, heartless and senseless murder” of a young man who was in the prime of his life. Mr LeShore was due to turn 27 on March 26.Speaking to The Royal Gazette from Illinois, Ms LeShore said: “His murder was so devastating to all of us, we still can’t believe it.“The family are not doing good. We still cry and we continue to ask ‘Why? Why Jahmiko?’“These people have no respect for human life, they have left a permanent scar on our family.“It breaks our heart to see what is happening to Bermuda. Every time we read about a life being lost to gun violence, our family prayed for the victims.“We never ever thought it would hit so close to home, now people are praying for us.”Five people, including two females, have been arrested in connection with Mr LeShore’s murder. No-one has been charged.Anyone with any information should contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or Crime Stoppers Bermuda on 800-8477.l Please note the video ‘Island Not The Same’ contains strong language.
